How to keep Calculator and Excel both on screen?

I have one page of a MS Office for Mac 2011 Excel spreadsheet open on my MPB (10.10.3) and want to use the OS X built-in calculator to add various figures from the sheet. However, every time I open the calculator, the spreadsheet whizzes off the screen to the left.

At my other location, I have the advantage of an extra display and suppose that I would at that place be able to view the spreadsheet and the calculator at the same time via the two screens. Did I set something up at the other location that I should now cancel? (Sorry, but I can't remember.)

All the other applications (calendar, contacts and so on) will, if required, remain on the screen along with the spreadsheet. But the one that I need, the calculator, does not. Surely, it should be possible to get them both to stay on the screen - but how?

Thanks in advance.

You have the calculator and Excel open in two different desktops, so when you choose one, it "whizzes" as you said, back to the desktop for that application. I'm not at my machine right now, but I think you can right-click (ctrl-click) on the icon on the Dock and open the optiosn from there to define on which desktop(s) you want the application to be anchored. I think there are other ways to accomplish it, too, but as I said, I'm not at my MBP right now so I can't experiment and let you know for sure what works.

OK, I'm back at my MBP and Mission Control will show you all the desktops and what windows are currently on them. You can drag from one to the other, then get out of Mission control and the desktops will reappear, with the apps moved.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply and help.
I've just been back to the e-mail to which the spreadsheet was attached and saved the spreadsheet to the desktop.
Now the calc and the spreadsheet both open in the same window.
I'm sorry to have cried "wolf" over this but assure you that it was playing up when I posted my plea for help.
Anyway, I'm psd that I can now do my sums.

Well, our posts coincided to the minute!
Thank you for the note about Mission Control - I must confess that I had not seen that app before. Now I see what it does and this is very helpful.
