Hello all
Could anyone please advise me on how to make an app a terminate and stay resident? Specifically Lightroom, I have it so that it launches on startup, but when I click on the close, red button in the top left corner, I would like it not to terminate. So the same behaviour as Mail and Outlook, etc. Lightroom takes a long time to startup and I would like to have it more quickly available.
Cheers
Mike

Virtually all Mac apps behave in that fashion, the window status means the app is running, but you can close all windows and the app continues to run until you specific quit it.

There are definitely exceptions to this and most apps give you the option to selecting the behavior.

Sys Prefs, for example, is an app where clicking on the Red dot makes the app quit. iTerm is a terminal replacement I use and it can be configured to quit the app when the last window is closed, otherwise, it just remains running.

So first, check in the settings of Lightroom to see if there's anything you can set there to make sure that the app continues to run if you close all the windows.

If that doesn't happen, then one "hack" is to open a new Lightroom window and then minimize it and ALWAYS keep it it minimized. Open and close other windows as you see fit and since there is always at least one window of Lightroom open, it won't quit on you.

You should just minimize the Lightroom window using the middle (yellow) button. Or maybe use it in it's own Space, then you can swipe it away for later use?

Thanks for your help so far. I know that I can just minimise it, but I often forget and just click the close button. When I close Mail or Outlook or Word and some others, they don't actually quit and show a black dot under the icon in the dock to show that they are TSRs, this is what I would like to be able to do. When I close Lightroom, it just completely quits.
Minimising and workspace are workarounds, but I would like to know if what I ask is possible and maybe I could apply it to some of my other often used apps.
It's all part of my learning of Mac Os, I'm sure that what I ask is possible, I just would like to know how.

You cannot change the behavior of an app that way. As I said, most apps follow the paradigm of not quitting until you specifically choose so. Heck, Chrome takes it a step further and requires you to not hold CMD+q, but hold it for a bit to actually quit the application.

Again, as I said, check the settings of each app and see what they give you control over. If nothing there can control it, you'll have to use the workarounds.

Welcome to our forums.

You need to be aware that macOS does not function the same way as Windows. Even the term "TSR" is different because Mac programs do not normally terminate and stay resident the same as some Windows programs.

Please follow the advice given above by our Moderator. It may be something that you'll need to get used to.
