Lately I've been seeing people using macOS Big Sur with a completely transparent dock. I managed to find a picture of it:

HOW do I get this? I want it bad!

A warm welcome to Mac-Forums. And Thank you for your post.

The "secret" is to go into System Preferences > Accessibility > Display and you will see this:

Here, you can play around with Transparency, Contrast etc. Clicking on the ? bottom right, tells you what they all mean.

Another factor is the the background appearance which you might/might not wish to try out in System Preferences > General > Appearance.

Have a shot at these settings and see what you can achieve.

When I get to that pane, I can only reduce transparency, but the OP wants to increase it.

You can increase the transparency by altering the contrast, both on the tick box and on the slider below. If you then change the background appearance, it can be done. Sure, it takes patience and determination & tinkering with the settings, but it works - the OP showed that in the first post:)

I just tried both ways (setting in Accessibility) and it does make a difference depending on which color background you choose for the desktop.

And as Ian pointed out, changing contrast settings affects the overall transparency.

My personal preference though is not to have too much transparency.

Well, yeah, but...

I can adjust the Display Contrast all the way from Normal to Maximum and it does not significantly affect the transparency of the Dock.

P.S. Ashwin, I'm retired now. If I could show you my hands, you'd see that I have lots of time on them. ;)

Hopefully when I retire in the next couple of decades, I have other things than the Dock transparency to occupy my time. Anyway, I've derailed the conversation enough. :)

Wouldn't 'Hide Dock' solve the OP's problem? Dock re-pops-up immediately on hover.

Oh yes, you will. And there will be plenty of time to try to help people on Mac Forums as well. :)

OP, try this:
