I'm about to replace an old MacBook Pro that has files, virtually all photo files, that have the same name but are actually different files. I found this situation by accident while using Duplicate File Detective. The files are stored in Photos and in various folders on one of two internal hard drives, but I want to consolidate them on my new MBP. My first thought was to create a script to change the file name by adding a sequential number or the file's creation date to the file name (after I teach myself how to write a script ), but I'm open to any suggestions on how to accomplish my objective.
And I promise to be a better file manager with my new MBP! :a

I think (you can experiment with one to see) that if you try to overwrite a file with another of the same name using Finder, you will be asked if you want to overwrite or keep both. Tell it to keep both and you will end up with two files--filename and filename1. I think there is also a button or checkbox to say, basically, apply to all so you can move a bunch at a time and have the same decision for all of them. I'm not where I can experiment right now, but you can try it by creating a new folder with some name like "Testing" and put a few files in it, then copy the files from the old MBP to the new with the same names and see if you get the option I am describing. If so, you don't need a script, just select what you want to move and go!
