I recently had to change the password to my apple account, thereby shutting down my icloud. Upon restarting it, I am finding that all 17,500 photos I have in the icloud library are apparently re-uploading. Any ideas on how to stop this? So far, only a few hundred seem to have been uploaded. I shut down photos and created a new library, but haven't restarted the icloud photo library yet. Suggestions?

I don't use iCloud, though I do use PhotoStream; my settings, on all Apple devices, are to disable iCloud for Photos and iCloud Sharing. You should also disable P/Stream if you don't want to sync images between devices.

The short answer is to open Photos on your Mac, then open preferences and you will be presented with the image Sue posted above.

Uncheck iCloud Photo Library. That should stop the upload in its tracks.

Make sure it is also unchecked on all other Apple devices.

Badshoehabit & IWT,
I failed to ask what my next step would be after shutting down the uploading. I had already done this, but since I do use the icloud library to share all my pics between devices, what I need is to find a way to keep from RE-uploading my photos.

Do you have two copies of the images that have been “re-uploaded” in your iCloud Photos library?

Yes, there are some doubles (I’ll be able to easily delete these). The # of photos on my iPhone and # shown as in iCloud photos on the iCloud webpage is the same. If I can keep more from uploading, I’ll be ok with what has happened so far

Untick all the buttons in the screenshot then enable ONLY Photo Stream.

Photo Sweeper is a cheap app which will find and eliminate doubles.

My BIG problem is solved, at least in relation to this stuff. I realized that this similar situation had occurred to me a while ago after I had made my postings. I ended up doing the same thing I did then: creating a new photos library w/ an option restart and allowing the new library to update. This worked for me as all my photos are already in icloud (plus those extras that are now doubles). The situation that is different is now I happen to have lots more icloud memory and so uploading my existing library a second time just began when in the past I was informed I needed to upgrade my icloud memory as it was not big enough to accept a second helping of my photos library.
