I'm trying to fill out a PDF form for a rebate on something. They ask for all kinds of model, sku, and serial numbers and my handwriting is not good enough to produce anything readable on the form. I don't want to use Adobe, as it's too expensive for using once or twice a year. I've tried a couple of free apps from the app store and can't make them work. One wants all my personal info and the PDF Reader Pro won't get what I type on the lines, it types half in the black bars between the lines. Can't seem to rectify that. Does anyone know of a decent free app that will let me type on a form that a manufacturer has emailed to me? Thank you.

Preview, which is included on your Mac, can be used for many of these forms. If you haven't already tried that, here's a quick overview video.

If you are running an older version of the Mac OS that allows you to run 32-bit applications, this is/was the hot ticket:

FormulatePro (free)
http://code.google.com/p/formulatepro/
Formulate will open your PDF forms and allow you to quickly and easily fill in the blanks, without altering the original PDF. Formulate will even allow you to fill in *locked* PDF forms, and to save the filled-in form as a template, or to save the data you've previously used in a form. Very easy to use.

Failing that, Preview does a decent job:

Open the PDF in preview. From the Tools menu, locate the sub-menu called "Annotate" and select from the list of options. You can add text and simple graphics, highlight text, strike-through text, add links. The tools are all there.
