This isn't my Mac, but someone else's, and I'm writing on behalf here to see if we can isolate the issue.

They're trying to set up the 6055e. At first, the setup went very well. The printer was able to communicate enough with the Mac (a MacBook of some kind running the latest version of Monterey) to print the alignment page. They declined the HP+ service.

The Mac won't add the driver. After clicking the + sign in printers and scanners, it just gives the "unable to verify the printer" message. I instructed them to turn the printer off, then on again. That didn't do anything to resolve the issue.

One possibility is to use the printer with a USB cable, but the printer had a "no USB" sticker for setup on the back of it. That would be fine if the driver were available through the website...

The worst part? HP doesn't seem to make this driver available anywhere to just add manually. We sometimes complain about Apple's "walled garden" approach, but this takes it to another level in my mind since you're dealing with a third party peripheral.

They also have an iPhone and the phone can see the printer, but it won't print from it. Nothing happens from the "print" command and the HP app has a greyed-out print button.

There's no way to reset the router on their end, as the router is a company-wide router. I know there are issues with 2.4GHz vs 5GHz WiFi with these printers.

Yes, the printers are connected to the same network. Yes, we've tried the on and off method. Any advice is appreciated--I think I've exhausted every feasible troubleshooting option up to this point and can't even find a driver from HP or anyone else to install the old-fashioned way.

Do you mean it has NO USB capability, or is the sticker indicating that USB is not needed, i.e., it can print wirelessly? If it can be connected by USB, I would suggest doing that, get the printer working and then work on the network connections.

It has a USB port and I verified that it's not a "dummy" port...it seems HP wants you to set everything up with their programs using WiFi, probably to try to sucker you into using their subscription that charges you for ink.

The issue is getting a driver for it.

That still doesn't have a direct link to a driver though...there's the app (which didn't work) and the option for AirPrint (not what we want here; USB is what is wanted).

Would this work and provide the necessary driver you need???

To use that printer, you have 2 options. And you are choosing not to use those two options. There is no driver for macOS because HP wants you to use AirPrint and take the burden off of them for providing a driver (and updates) for their product.

As Bob mentioned, HP seems to take a different approach for printing with a Mac and here are some extra little bits of information from their sight if it helps:

HP printer setup (Mac built-in driver)
Use AirPrint or available basic drivers to set up and use an HP printer on a Mac computer.
and
Connect and set up a printer in macOS
Set up your printer when it is on the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac or with a USB cable without installing any additional drivers.

And if that doesn't work, then I guess it's off to buy a new different printer, but check the specs first!!!

The problem for the person who is setting it up is that they can't really do anything about a router, as they are using it on a router that is not personal and is shared by hundreds.

I know I'm avoiding both options here when advising...because they, plain and simple, do NOT work.

I'm going to suggest replacing the printer. (I'll also recommend a laser over an inkjet, of course).

I will say, HP printers sure aren't what they used to be. I have a color LaserJet of some variety I bought over two years ago and it won't print certain files, needs turned on and off quite a bit, and doesn't seem to get the same toner life my previous LaserJet got.
