Hi folks. How can I get my printer to work? For some reason my Mini M1 won't see my printer. Can't use generic drivers, and can't download Big Sur driver installers.

Any ideas how I can get this to work? I don't want to run through CUPS. Way too much work.

Cheers

The HP 1012 LJ works fine with Big Sur. Drivers are built in to macOS. You also have a choice to use the Gutenprint drivers which work even better for the 1012:

In case you're wondering.... I have a 1012 which is still chugging along nicely since 2003. :)

Installed Gutenprint. Images are of my printer options after the install. Do I need a reboot for some reasons? I thought HP drivers would have been an expected set of default drivers, but nothing. Hence my post.

The Apple discussions thread say the same thing as I stated. The Gutenprint drivers work fine.

Reset the Printing from System Preferences, and then install the HP 1012. The Gutenprint drivers will be seen and used. Like I said, it's working great here, actually better than the HP/Apple drivers. Screen Shot 2021-10-09 at 23.28.20.png

Ya the problem wasn't the Mac or the drivers. After installing both drivers, neither would show up. My printer was plugged into a USB-C dock by Plugable. I shifted cables to the Mac itself and both drivers showed up.

So this is a Plugable thing. Off to tell them about it.

Cheers

GutenPrint is now deprecated for Mac OS, as of 7 July 2024. Are there any suitable substitutions, particularly for Sonoma 17.5 on Apple Silicon?

Welcome to the forum. You posted to a thread that is three years old. It would have been better to start a new thread. Perhaps a MOD will move your post for you and create the thread. What printer are you trying to support?

According to GutenPrint's web page, they have deprecated "support".

https://gimp-print.sourceforge.io/index.php

In other words, there will be no new versions of GutenPrint. It doesn't mean that GutenPrint will stop working on existing installations. If GutenPrint was previously working with your setup, it should continue to work just fine, until you upgrade to some later version of the Mac OS than you currently are using, that causes the GutenPrint drivers to break. Practically that means that if you intend to keep your printer working, you should probably forego upgrading the OS on the Mac that your printer is attached to until such time as you purchase a new printer.

I don't know if the existing GutenPrint drivers will work under Sonoma. GutenPrint doesn't list them as a supported OS, but that doesn't mean that they won't work. You'll have to try them to see. That shouldn't be a problem, since they are free. You can just download them and try them. Trash them if they don't work.

When you find that the GutenPrint drivers no longer work with the version of the Mac OS that you are running, if your printer uses Postscript, or a clone of Postscript (i.e. just about all laser printers other than the very cheapest ones; but unfortunately very few inkjet printers), the Mac OS includes a generic Postscript printer driver that should work fine, at least for a printer's basic functions. (Special features, like multiple paper trays, probably won't work.)
