hi,
I just installed Java in my Mac.. but when I type command "javac" in terminal it says

The operation couldn’t be completed. Unable to locate a Java Runtime that supports javac.
Please visit http://www.java.com for information on installing Java.

(I read recently that due to a bug in processor M1 you can't install Java 8 now on a Mac that has that processor, but I don't see a choice other than Java 8 here,

thank you...

Why would you want/need Java? I have the Java browser support activated but only for Safari which i seldom use. I have not bothered with Java Runtime since MacOSX 10.8 and have never needed it.

well, it doesn't really matter why I need it... I certainly need to be able to install it.. why is this such a big deal... I have a few standalone Java classes I want to test for something.. I do need Java installed for that.. I also need to install some things (like Tomcat & NetBeans) for which Java needs to be installed... and I do want the whole package, not just the runtime environment..

thank you for your response...

from google search:

Temporarily turn off firewall or antivirus clients Active firewall or antivirus software may prevent Java from installing properly. Remember to turn your firewall or antivirus software back on when you have successfully completed the Java install.

I found where to turn off firewall sw, can't find where to turn off anti-virus sw..
(at any rate firewall was already turned off when I looked..)

I have read this.. I know how to install Java, both on Windows and Macs.. I have done it a no. of times... in this instance it's not working as expected... (and I do get the "you have successfully installed Java", alert... but still, the terminal can't find command "javac", and I can't find the Java installation in my computer (which should be in /Library/)

thank you..

I'm assuming you are using a recent Mac and the recent macOS version and just wondering if Apple's silicone or even System Integrity Protection (SIP) is messing up the installation???

I have no idea, but I'm just taking a stab and a wild guess at whatever might be blocking the installation.

Does SIP need to be disabled I wonder in order for the Java installation to work??? I sure have no idea...

Dear kali89, I wasn't questioning your genuine need to instal Java, just curious about what you needed it for. As stated, not something I have ever needed personally.

You should probably tell us which exact Mac you have and which exact version of macOS you are running.
