Under Pointer Control -> Mousepad in Sequoia you can select to turn off the trackpad when using a mouse. This works fine with one exception. When you turn off the trackpad you can't type. What should I be doing to make this work?

More info. Some keys work and some don't, which is really weird.

With that feature turned off the keys reliably work? Are the keys that are not working closer to the trackpad?

When trackpad is active all keys work as expected. With trackpad off random keys work and proximity to the trackpad is not a factor. I thought at first the particular rows, such as A-' might be affected but it is specific keys. Unfortunately, I have not tried to determine exactly which keys work and which don't. Might that be important?

I'm assuming this is a software issue but it could be hardware related. Is anybody with Sequoia able to type all letters with the trackpad disabled?

This is a test of the keyboard with the trackpad ignored and a bluetooth mouse attached.

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. I think that's the sentence that works them all 1234567890-=!@#$%^&*()_+{}|[]\:";'<>?,./

Yep, every key works on my machine in Sonoma. See my profile for the MBP model.

I have Sequoia on my MBA and turned on that particular option and plugged in an external mouse plugged in. All of the keys work, however I also find that the trackpad isn't really disabled either, I can still drag things around with it.

I have Sonoma on my M1. The issue is with Sequoia on my Wife's MBP.

That's curious. On my system the trackpad is non-responsive with that selected. Wonder if it's a difference in hardware?

Is there any chance the battery is swelling and pushing up on the keyboard? What MBP does she have?

Did you enable the five option key press option and the option to turn off trackpad when mouse is active? I'm not sure what just turning on Mouse Keys does. The problem crops up when those options are selected and the trackpad is turned off.

I meant Sequoia, sorry.
Thanks. She may have a hardware problem of some sort. However, did you select the five option-click and turn off trackpad when mouse is active options? They seem to be key to this problem.

Nope. That's why we replaced her previous machine. She had a Mid-2015 and we replaced it with a refurbished 2018.

Sounds like you are running the same settings I am and it is working. I may have some sort of a hardware problem.

No. I have no reason to use that option. That is an Accessibility setting.

I believe that is the only way to turn off the trackpad when using the mouse. If there is another way let me know. It might work for me.

Under Accessibility there is a section for "Mouse & Trackpad" that allows the trackpad to be ignored. Has nothing to do with the five option key thing.

You're right! I missed that. It works. Thanks.

Now I just have to remember to use the mouse when working with my wife's computer.
