Dear Explorers,

I'm trying to use my iMac 27" late 2013 with High Sierra as a second monitor while working (on 3ds Max)on Windows 10 installed with Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro 16" 2019.

I'm using a thunderbolt cable plugged directly into the iMac and through the classic adpater to USB-C into the MacBook Pro.

This combination works perfectly when I run Catalina on my Macbook Pro but doesn't work with Windows 10. I tried CMD+F2 on iMac and CMD+fn+F2 but nothing happens.

I also tried using a HDMI cable with adapter to usb-c (on Macbook) and to thunderbolt (on iMac)…doesn't work. Maybe some specific little software for windows or Mac to make this connection possible??? Thanks!

Best Regards

John

Target Display Mode that you are attempting only works with supported version of iMacs and macOS. It won't work with Windows.

If a second screen is needed for your MBP, grab a regular monitor (depending on your size, resolution needs) that's fairly affordable.

Sounds like you have all the correct hardware...and correct macOS versions installed according to the Apple document linked below. And as you said...all works fine when using the macOS.

Here's an Apple document for anyone interested in reading more. Lots of details how to use an iMac as an external display/2nd display.

Lots of specifics mentioned in terms of what model iMac's this works with...and what specific macOS versions that must be installed on both devices:

Yeah, thank you. The points are two: 1) I don't have space on my desk for another monitor
and: 2) For a monitor as good as the iMac I should spend not so little.
I am sure there is a less consuming solution.

It can be done if you use VMware Fusion, rather than Bootcamp. It's not free, but it's cheaper than a monitor. And you might appreciate having Windows literally in a window, with the ability to drag & drop via the Finder.

How does this help with a Windows PC talking to the iMac??

Maybe @jpdemers means installing VMware on the iMac like Parallels.
At the moment I'm going to partition also the iMac with a little space for Windows just to run as monitor.
I also tried the app "Duet" but it's totally useless. Anyway still looking for a better solution.
I found this that could be maybe useful: How To Use an iMac as a Monitor for a PC

But I think this man here* could have the answer.
