Dear all,

I'm using High Sierra 10.13 connected to a CanoScan LiDE 100.

There are no more drivers created by Canon, so I am trying to use Image Browser as scanning software.

Unfortunately it's very unreliable. It seems to work OK when I've just powered the iMac on, but if I have to make another scan it spends ages waiting for the scanner.

Sometimes it recovers from this but still won't scan, sometimes I get the spinning beach ball.

Latest crap-out. Spent 20 minutes trying to communicate with the scanner, then reported an error "Scanner is turned off, USB cable is disconnected ". Neither is true.

I could buy a third party application, but I would like to see if I can get it working with Apples wonderful OS.

cheers

Hi Patrick,

thanks for your post. I was aware that it's supposed to be supported having Googled this earlier today.

The VueScan is an option but it's nearly £30 and I resent throwing my hard-earned at this. It's the war time 'mend and make do' mentality.

thanks anyway

What is "Image Browser?" Do you mean Image Capture or some other software? Have you tried opening System Preferences/Printer & Scanners and selecting your CanoScan, then scanning from there?

I'm pretty sure that any default OS X scanning software actually uses the Image Capture engine to do the scanning regardless of which "app" source is used to initiate the scan.

VueScan I believe uses its own engine driver and also has more options. I used to use it some years ago and it worked well and better than most scanning apps. Well not as good as the old Agfa and similar System 8-9 software, but that was then and this is now eh??? !!! :Blushing:

Is Agfa still in business? Many years ago during a tour in Quebec, Canada at a RCAF-USAF Norad base, I purchased an Agfa Isolette wide format camera. Used it for years and was one of the best cameras I ever owned. I can't remember the film size but I know it yielded large prints.

It seems their graphics side is still active but strictly on the large commercial scale it looks like…

Agfa Graphics is a leading supplier to the printing industry, offering innovative and reliable solutions:

Commercial, newspaper and packaging printers around the globe count on us for the most extensive range of integrated solutions
https://www.agfagraphics.com/global/en/about-us.html

My very first camera was an Agfa Gevabox sp??? box camera that took 120 roll film if I recall correctly.

I still have our old Agfa SnapScan e-40 scanner but not connected to or working with any Mac. But it was excellent at scanning with great Mac software.

Yup, having a senior moment there.

I have tried Printers and Scanners but it doesn't show the scanner ! When I click the 'Open Scanner' button, it opens the 'Scanner' pop-up but I click the 'show details' button and nothing happens, just a grey popup box.

I'm guessing at this point that Apple's scanner drivers just aren't up to the job.

Solved !

I cleared the Safari cache and the history. Freed everything up. The Image Capture scanning now works every time.
Also cured the SBBOD problem.

Thanks for all the contributions.

It doesn't look good for Canon's drivers either but you may want to try their various worldwide support sites.
IE: Canon Canada support only lists Mac OS X 10.10 as the last supported version. Other pages seem to indicate some High Sierra 10.13 support but I can't confirm.
http://canon.ca/en/Contact-Support/Consumer/Downloads

I'd give VueScan a try and it seems to still work in a trial mode and download here (use the 64x version):
https://www.hamrick.com/old-versions.html

It's still cheaper than a new cheap scanner that may not even be supported in the latest macOS. :Blushing:

Or maybe try some of these hits:
https://www.google.ca/search?client...F-8&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=BcSeWuWDPOLe8AfjuYaAAg

PS: With that "disconnect" warning, I'd suggest you try connecting with a different well known good working USB cable and make sure the scanner is turned On and restart the Mac.

Actually I'm a bit surprised that Image Capture.app doesn't work a bit better for you. Is its window fully expanded to show all details etc???

PS: You might also want to try adding the scanner to your System Prefs Printer&Scanner pref again in case your High Sierra 10.13 notices the change and gives you some new options to add the CanoScan LiDE 100 — again, and then try using it. Again, make sure the CanoScan LiDE 100 is turned On and connected while doing so.

Glad you got your problem solved even though there doesn't seem to be any logical, or directly related explanation for the method you used. :|
