From what I understand you are meant to install sorbet by imaging the disk from the .dmg file to a partition but when I go into the disk utility the partition options are greyed out because its a system disk so I can't image it?

Is there a way to force it to partition the HDD or will I just have to deal with tiger and its limited software support?

You might want to provide details of the Mac. It sounds like it's an older PPC Mac running Tiger.

Hello!

I have a imac g5 that I am going to install sorbet leopard on, but when I went to partition the disk it said "This disk contains the startup volume and can't be partitioned. Could you tell me what I can do to partition my HDD, (PS I have no other macs in the house)

You can't make changes to your hard drive while it's booted up with the operating system running.

You need to boot from your Tiger disk (you still have it, right?) enter Utilities, Disk Utility, and then do the partitioning.

Warning: Make sure you have a backup first as partitioning can destroy data. Also you will definitely need the optical drive on your G5 to be in working order.

Nope, it's a not tech savvy friend's computer and I don't think he would have kept the disks, I can use some recordable dvds to make my own? Or do I need special apple disks?

You can't make your own Tiger disk. You may be able to find a Tiger DVD on eBay. Just make sure that it's the version for his G5 or the Tiger DVD which can be used to boot any model.

Again, he should make sure that the optical drive is functional in that G5.

You should be able to create a DVD for Tiger, but the issue is installing it. Older Macs will only boot from internal drives (optical or HDD) or external Firewire drives. USB startup was not supported on most pre Intel Macs.
