Well, your device is 10 years old (see below) and has a dying battery - not sure what the 'running hot' means, i.e. another issue? If near an Apple store or other authorized repair service (such as Best Buy), you could take the iPad in for a diagnostics check (not sure the cost?) - if you have an Apple computer, Coconut Battery could check the status of the Air 2's battery (cycles over 1000 and/or health below 70-80% poor indicators of battery condition).

If you're a DIY, then attempt at battery replacement might be a possibility - check iFixit for kit costs and repair difficulty. As for me, I replaced my iPad Air 2 after 5 years with a Pro, so you might consider getting a new iPad (or depending on budget, a used or refurb). Dave

Replace the battery or have a place do it for you.

We had a very successful battery replacement done on my wife's iPhone 6s a while back for a very reasonable price but also comes with a pretty **** good guarantee. Check their website and see if they have one in your area or something similar.
Check out their site here for more information >:

If the battery voltage is lower the normal, that could cause excessive heat and as the voltage drops the amperage goes up normally and amperage equals heat, so a good replacement battery May fix both your problems.

If it's still works for you normally, a battery replacement is a pretty cheap fix to keep on going for another few years and 10 plus years was a pretty good run for it if it was used even normally.

The iPad running for 2 hours means the battery is essentially shot. The reason its running hot is that it's unable to match the power demand and doing way more work to sustain the draw.

As the others have recommended, if that's the only issue with this iPad, then replace the battery and march on.

The iPad gets physically quite hot. I'm not a DIY for hardware at all, so I'll have to find someplace to replace the battery. Thank you much!

Thanks for link, but no one within a hundred miles of me, as I'm in USA. I actually forgot how old the iPad is, as it did have a great run. Will see if Best Buy can replace the battery, because messing with its guts is way beyond my expertise!

That's a good idea to try Best Buy as it is not the best thing to attempt even for a fairly adequate do-it-yourselfer to get the proper gaskets back in place Etc.

If you're Local Best Buy cannot do it, if you're on a local Facebook group for your area ask for help or see if anybody does that sort of work for free or reasonable price.

Or try a Google search for possible iPad repair people or repair places within your area unless you live in really remote boonies with no one around for miles and miles... 🙄

A lot of those small kiosks in the mall do battery replacements. They mainly focus on screen replacements, so check there as well.

The only thing you have to consider is that the battery replacement might easily run you into the upper 100's to low 200's and a brand new WiFi iPad Air is $599 and WiFi iPad Mini is $499. So perhaps a newer iPad is a better deal if you're going to keep it for a decade or so.

We are in the middle of nowhere - no malls, or such, so Apple it is. Since I can't update past iOS 15.2, you're right - better off getting a new one.
