Hello!
I apologize for bothering you all with this problem, but I can't figure out or find a solution.

My wife has an iPad Pro 9.7" MM172LL/A using iOS 16.7.8.

She used to be able to go to a web site and click the Share button, then choose e-mail. She'd then send a link to the reicpient. Also, she could go to her Photos and open and pick a photo to e-mail to someone. The same held true for sending a web page via e-mail. Now, these don't work.

When she clicks "Send", the normal Swoosh! sound isn't heard. The message isn't in her Sent box, nor is it in her Drafts folder. It simply vanishes. The recipient never gets the e-mail.

We've tried many e-mail addresses with no luck. Note that the problem started before yesterday's update to 16.7.8 & continues after the update.

To confirm that Mail is working, she can open a new message, type something and send it. The Swoosh! sound is plainly heard, the message goes to the Sent folder and the recipient gets the message.

I tried to figure out of she could drag-and-drop a photo into a message, but can't figure out how to drag-and-drop since Mail or the photo takes up the whole screen.

Do you all know what I can do to try to fix this?

Thank You For Helping!

The most recent version of iPadOS is 17.5.1. Can that iPad be updated to that version? I ask because it works perfectly as you describe it on my iPad with 17.5.1 installed.

EDIT: I looked at Mactracker and apparently it cannot be upgraded to 17. I'll drop out for others to sort it out.

Thank You Jake for taking time to reply & for the suggestion.
The iPad won't allow version 17. I verified on Apple's list.

Hi Paul - I'm sure already tried but have you done a hard reset of the device, i.e. probably on that model holding the home and top buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, then release and wait (directions HERE). But I'd have to say that the iPad was released in 2016 (Everymac Specs) and if your MBPros are indeed from 2006-7 vintage years, then some new hardware seems a consideration? Good luck - Dave :)

Last but not least you might like to try a different email client other than the native Mail app. There are plenty on the App Store to choose from. Blue Mail and Edison Mail are pretty good or Spark legacy version which I use.

Thank You All for helping.
Thanks for the suggestion, Dave about Hard Reset. I didn't know of the procedure. Unfortunately, Hard Reset didn't solve the problem but may come in handy when the next glitch arrives.
I wonder if a factory reset will do the job, although I'm hesitant to mess things up trying.

Thanks Rod for suggesting a different mail client & for naming some. If my wife agrees to try one, she may enjoy using one of these instead.

And, as Dave mentioned, our equipment is old- especially the MacBook Pros. My 2007 MacBook Pro will be the first to go. (Probably to be replaced by an Air)

Thank You All Again for helping & for good suggestions,
Paul

Hi again Paul - I was just re-reading your OP and was wondering if the problem occurs only when trying to use email features from w/i Safari? Your implications is that the Mail app works by itself or am I misinterpreting? If Safari may be the issue, you can Force Close the app, reopen, and see what happens.

Also, has your wife tried another browser - shown below is a search from the App store and plenty are available. Finally, Resetting the iPad has a number of options (see Apple's article) - of course if you decide to also 'Erase' all, then make sure you back up her photos and other important information in some fashion. Good luck. Dave

Thanks Dave for the follow-up.
In Safari, if she clicks to share a web page or photo by e-mail, the mail never sends
If she goes to Photos App and picks a photo, chooses Share, then e-mail, the mail never sends

If she goes to Mail app and creates a new message, the mail sends- even with attachments.

It seems like Safari and Photos are the problems (or something common to both).

Just perchance, go to the 'App Switcher' (see below) and force close both Photos and Safari - nothing is lost – then reopen both apps. Dave

Thank You Dave for mentioning the App Switcher.

Nothing I've tried yet solved the problem. Maybe it's a problem with that particular version of iOS when it is in that particular model of iPad.

The next step will be a factory reset (after a backup). I've no idea when I'll be given access to the iPad in order to try this, but I'll report back.
