Hi Guys, I'm currently staying with a family member who has Parkinson's. His iPhone 5S shows the above message when I press the Home button, and cannot be used. If I follow the corrective procedure, will I have to wipe his phone, losing important phone numbers? (This may not be that important, as more or less important numbers can be retrieved from online sources.) Any advice would be appreciated, Mike.

This happens when the wrong passcode was entered too many times. You'll need a version of iTunes that is compatible with the iOS on a iPhone 5S. The latest generation of iPhone is the 15, so this is like 10 generations behind and is from 2013. You'll need a Mac from the Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite (maybe El Capitan) era with the correct version.

Once you do have the right version of iTunes, once connected, your only option is to reset the device thus losing everything on there. The normal course of action after that is to restore a backup to the device. If you don't have a device, then you've lost everything.

Later versions of iPhone supported backing up to the cloud, but not sure the 5S supported that.

So if this phone wasn't backed up, then you'll essentially have to set it up as a new device.

According to this video from YouTube you can Restore the iPhone 5s using a PC version of iTunes on a Windows computer.
Unfortunately it will wipe all data, return the iPhone to Factory settings and require signing in with the original Apple ID used to setup the phone initially.

If all that sounds okay then, yes, it can be saved.

The trick with this is that since Apple replaced iTunes with Music a number of very early iPhones that cannot run current iOS became incompatible. Windows on the other hand still runs iTunes.

If you try this, do let us know if it worked. (y) :)
