iPhone SE speaker icon has line through it by default when starting to playing video. I don't think this was always the case (?) but lately when I tap on Photos, videos and then tap on a video it plays with no sound and the speaker icon along the bottom of the screen has a line through it. If I tap that icon the sound comes on. Is there a way I can have it play the sound automatically by default? I've looked through all the settings on the phone and search on the web including YouTube but no joy. fullsizeoutput_25e2.jpeg

Do you have the phone on silent, the switch on the side? If so, all sounds should be muted on the phone. Videos are a little bit of an anomaly and depend on the app. You'll find that any app that auto plays video will likely be silent, but a tap will unmute it at whatever volume setting you have it at. However, there are other situations where the video might play in a smaller factor (not full-screen), and tapping it will send it full-screen and unmuted.

It's a little app specific and you have to figure out what each app is doing.

For example, on Youtube, with my always silent phone, I select a video and I get a "Tap to unmute" indication, I tap to have it unmute. But that only works through the Youtube app. If the video is embedded in another app, then this doesn't work, I have to take the phone out of silent to get the audio to play at all.

So you'll have to experiment to figure out what works with the apps you use.

Hi Ashwin. Thanks for your prompt replay. The mute button on the side is not on mute. The videos have all been taken using an iPhone camera (video selection) apart from one which is from YouTube but they are all the same in that the speaker icon at the bottom of the screen has a line through it when the video is initially tapped to play. It is no big deal really, I can simply tap the speaker icon and the sound will play it's just that I don't understand why that would be the default. One would assume that if someone wants to play a video they will want sound with it!
