I did press volume up, volume down, then power button. I was then advised to press the power button for a full minute. Then an outline of a computer appeared in the iphone and a line suggesting a cable or cord-as if i should connect it to a computer. Sadly i was far away from my computer. I plugged it into my HiCity multi usb charger. After a few. Inutes my phone came back. It had a 70% charge, so it had not been out of power. I knew thst because i had not used it more than other days! It had a full charge overnight and this was mid day. Now it is fine but i am concerned. Thoughts? It is an XR and i want to wait for the new phones in September to replace it.

The button press sequence you went through did a hard reset of the phone. Normally, you'd get an Apple icon before the phone shows you the home screen. When the phone doesn't have enough charge to start up, you should get the following image.

You would not get a computer icon or anything on it.

Anyway, if plugging into a charger got it to function again, you're fine.

One of the things about our phones is that we seldom turn it off or reboot it unless you're updating it, so sometimes it get into a state that needs a power-cycle or a hard reset to fix, this is normal and should not be alarming.

Why? What triggered you to do that?

Who advised you to do that? Apple?

That means it thinks the battery is dead. The phone can show that only for a while using the last dregs of the battery.

That sort of points to a failing battery that is about to die. The XR units have had reports of battery dying at about 20%. The "fix" seems to be to do a full factory reset. Doing that will erase EVERYTHING, so it is a plan of last resort. I would wait to see if it happens again before going to the DFU. But, here are the directions:

I think that is only if the phone is plugged into a power supply by cable. Could be wrong, but I read that somewhere.

On the older phones you'd hold down the home button and power button for a minute to do the hard reset. With the home button disappearing, this volume up, down, power button sequence is the new hard reset sequence..

And you are to hold the power button until the Apple logo appears, once it appears you release it.

The ifixit article I linked has as step 1, plug into a computer with a usb cable. I guess if the battery has power, it can do the DFU without power, but if the battery is dead, or the iPhone thinks it's dead, I think you need the cable.

This sequence also has the cable plugged in before doing the key sequence.

Oh, well, who knows?

Well I guess that's the question at hand, when the 3 button sequence was being pressed, was it plugged into a computer or stand alone. This seems to indicate whether it enter DFU mode or just restarts. The OP will have to clarify.

Yep, because the first step in the DFU reset is to plug it into a Mac, then do the up/down/power switch pushes. You didn't do the first step, so it asked for you to do that so it could proceed. When you plugged into a power supply instead, the reset was cancelled and the iPhone went into charging mode. Probably for the best, as a DFU reset is a full wipe of the phone and a reset to factory setup, so you would have lost everything on the iPhone at that point.
