At the moment I have iPhoto 8.1.2. running (or not) on both my MacBook Pro 13 mid 2010 running El Capitan and also on my iMac 21 1/2 running Yosemite. I haven't really used it and I have no idea when the last time was? I have just tried to open it on both machines and it tells me that I must update it before I can run it. I have been trying for e couple of hours, including a download of 'iPhoto 9.3 update' which I 'thought' would be the update needed. It isn't according to the message when I tried it.

Please, can someone tell me how I get to the correct place to get the latest iPhoto programme?

I nearly forgot. It must have been before I installed a new SSD as the sys disk and moved the old SSHD hybrid sys disk to replace the superdrive. I haven't done anything to the original SSHD and it still has all of the original system, programmes and data on it. Both of the iPhoto versoins are the same. Is it OK for me to get rid of the programmes like iMovi/iPhoto/etc. I know that it won't help the downlevel, but it would possibly make things less confusing?

Sorry to be such a dimbo on this (and most software things come to think of it! :Grimmace: )

I don't remember if this works for international versions of the Mac App Store but try logging in and looking under the "Purchased" tab. I believe the version that works with El Capitan is 9.6.1 or similar.

If I remember correctly some users had to put the old version in a separate folder first temporarily.

I have had a look in Purchased and it doesn't show in there at all, but it's in Finder on both of my machines in Applications.

Edit : - A thought? Has Photo taken over from iPhoto? If so I have that available. But not sure just how to use it??

Photos has replaced iPhoto. When you run Photos it should import your iPhoto library into the Photos library. I think you'll like the Photos program better than iPhoto since it has better editing features and is easier to use. You might need to practice with it a bit to get used to it though. I completely removed the old iPhoto program from my Mac and iPhone and use nothing but Photos now.

I am beginning to realise that I have a cliff to climb here Chas! I will have to have a gander at some lessons on just how to use Photos as at the moment I have almost all of my photos filed away in folders in Finder. I think it's a leftover from my Windoze daze?

The bit about iPads and iPhones is not a problem because we have neither and don't know many who have !!

I use Photoshop Elements 13 for my photo editing. I can't afford the full Photoshop and would never use most of it even if I could so it would be a waste for me.

I also need to clean up thesecond HD I have on my MBP ! All I have to do now is to work out which applications I can ditch Even if I screw up I still have the CCC backup from before I fitted the new SSD and moved the sys HD.

If you've not used iPhoto for ages, adapting to Photos won't be difficult and it shouldn't be too irksome to copy the folder contents from Finder into the new app. You will still be able to use PSE.

http://www.apple.com/macos/photos/

Initially I was confused about the hierarchy in the App as it goes Albums > Folders > Albums.

Create some titled Folders in Photos then copy and paste contents of folders from Finder. You can then split them into Albums albums you create within Folders if you want - or create the relevant Albums before copying.

This how my library looks - albums.jpg

That was an easy and interesting video Sue, I like the bacon and egg breakfast in there too. The French cook all sorts of lovely things, but breakfast :(:(

I will have to look at those tips a bit later SD, but they too look interesting! Ta..
