I have 15GB iPod, which is currently running version 2.2 of the firmware. I downloaded the latest iPod Updater software (2005-02-22). When I run it, it sees the iPod, notes that it's running 2.2 and that it requires updating, but the Update button is greyed out. The Restore button is available, but of course, I've not used it.

Any ideas why my Update button won't work?

My iPod is PC-formatted, because I used to use it with a PC, but when I went Mac-wards, there didn't seem to be any issues with it not being Mac formatted, and I wasn't given an option to change it. It's worked fine in every other respect. I don't particularly mind reformatting it, but only if I know it'll solve the problem.

Thanks for any suggestions,
David

Im not sure why itd do that, is that the admin computer for that ipod? whats the ipods name? what are your macs specs? reformatting should solve the problem, if you want it to read and write on mac and pc, it needs to be formatted as fat32.

Actually, when I did the 2.3 update, it didn't give me the option to update either, only restore. This was on my new 12" powerbook. I just went ahead and did it.

what gen were your ipods, and is the OP's ipod? mines 3rd gen, it may have to do with hardware/software compatibility.

I lost count of which gen mine is, it's the one with 4 buttons and a normal wheel. 2nd? It's 15GB, and I think they only did 15GB in one generation...?

My Mac is a Powerbook 17 1.5GHz (see left). I did also reboot at some point (I had to after I installed a security update) but this didn't make a difference. I've also tried both with and without iTunes running.

If I just go for Restore, will iTunes resync everything (including the play counts) and carry on as before, or will I have to do anything to get the iPod back as it was before?

thats a 3rd gen, no reason for any incompatibility, I think maybe you should reformat. and try repairing permissions, which should be done anyway after software installations and updates.

Repairing Permissions didn't sort it, so I chose the Restore option, which wiped everything, then resynced. I appear now to have both the 2.3 firmware and a Mac-formatted iPod. All is now good, although I'm still not sure why the Update option didn't do it. I guess I'll never know, as it's Mac formatted anyway now.

It could be that since it was PC formatted you needed to download the PC firmware upgrade.. only a thought though since I have no idea :) I have a 3G iPod also, but mine worked fine but it was Mac formatted though.
