Naw, basically any program that can create 320x280 mpeg-4 or h.264 videos at 30fps will do.

Easiest (free) way I know of is an app called iSquint. You can also use FFmpegX, and there's probably tons of others out there...

That's not entirely true. Some programs, including the current version of FFmpegX, cannot create iPod compatible H.264 files.

The easiest way to make sure you're making iPod compatible movies is to use on of the programs specifically designed for it like iSquint or Podner, etc. You can search for them at MacUpdate.com.

Ah okay, didn't spot your H.264 remark...
Thanks for clearing that up.

I thought if you have the latest 7.x Quicktime that you can create the movie files via iMovie and the like.

If you have Quicktime Pro 7.0.3 or later. You have to have the Pro version.

No, you shouldn't need QT Pro because the option should be available under the export options of iMovie. I'm not at home to check this, but based on past experience, I'd say it is true. I've even seen this discussed on the FCP forums at Apples site.

Yeah that's right:
If you export a film using iMovie, you can select the 'Pro' iPod export option with only the free version of QT as well.

Video Software Links and Methods (For Windows Users)

Videora iPod Converter (Use this with one of the rippers below to prepare your video for ipod)
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/

PQDVD Software (I've tried all their converters, the one for palm works best)
http://www.pqdvd.com/

DVD to X #1 DVD Ripper (Makes great MPEG 1 or 2 Files)
http://www.dvdtox.com/

Method:

Use a ripper to take video off a DVD you legally own using one of the ripper tools listed above or below. The ripper will produce either an mpeg 1, mpeg 2 or avi (divx) file. Use Videora iPod converter to format the video for your ipod. I have had best results converting divx encoded above 700 kbps video 128 kbps audio to mpeg 4 768 kbps video 128 kbps audio.

Some other links for things I am in the process of trying out

BTW, the new version of ffMpegX released yesterday now supports h.264 iPod output. It claims to be 7-times faster than Quicktime.
