Maybe the shift key you used isn't working. But holding down the shift key while clicking Restore is supposed to still work in Windows.

Why not just plug your iPhone in and hit the upgrade button?

If your doing this because you want to jailbreak your phone, keep in mind that 2.1 has been jailbroken; if not, just use iTunes to update it, thats why it's there.

Restore in Itunes

Found a solution:
I'm going to go ahead and assume ur using vista rn't u? I am of the perception that the shift capacity is disabled by windows as a general security measure for running programs who also have similar capacities, so as to prevent them from opening other programs, maybe I'm wrong and microsoft just did it out of spite 4 apple, but I know how to work around it:
Simply run Itunes as administrator.
- That means right click ur itunes program icon and press the option 'run as administrator'
- Typically speaking the option doesn't appear for shortcuts so open up ur itunes program folder:
Computer > Local Disk C > Program Files > Itunes
Then right click on the file thats named 'Itunes.exe'; then click 'run as administrator'
wait for it to load and go through all the notifications, sometimes it says theme has been changed and vista home premium or business etc. looks like vista basic. Don't worry, now use the shift + restore option.
- After itunes closes, the appearance of vista should return back to normal.
- You can make this permanent by right clicking 'Itunes.exe' and going to properties, and then compatibility, there's an option you can tick 'run as administrator' but i don't recommend as its annoying 4 the vista theme 2 change everytime if u use itunes often. Hope this works :) .

-- SOLUTION --

I had the same problem. Itunes 9.0.1. Then upgraded to 9.0.3. Still not working. Finally the following sequence worked. Don't know why, or which of these steps is the key to success.

1. It wanted me to download 3.1.3 firmware. I selected "download but don't install".
2. I copied my version of the firmware I want to recover with into the Itunes folder where the 3.1.3 firmware was located. On the mac it is Library/Itunes/Iphone Sofware Updates
3. I opened Itunes and pressed Alt-Restore! NOTE: alt-restore did not work previously. option-restore does not work. Maybe this is due to by generic usb keyboard.

--Solution 2--

I installed Itunes (9.0.3) on my wife's PC latop. Shift Restore worked first time.

This is either an Itunes Bug, or more likely Itunes is trying to cleverly decide when this option (doing a restore) should be available and messing people up. Having this functionality on the shift/option button is ridiculously retarded in the first place.

Update:

After I copied my firmware into the Iphone update folder, Itunes decided it was not needed and moved it to the trash! :Angry-Tongue:

So leave it in some other directory
