ok so I recently had my logic board repaired and it was working properly for a week or so after the repair, and is now locking up again with the " you need to restart your computer " box.

my question is whatelse can cause kernel panic and how can i run a diagnostic on it to find out if other hardware is running properly???

thanks for the help in advance guys

Defective ram or incompatible ram are a major cause of kernel panics...especially if new (or different) ram was recently installed in a computer that was previously working fine.

Yes the ram "chip" is the ram. Just curious...why was your logic board replaced?

Seems to me you might want to go back to the folks that replaced the logic board...and see if they can straighten things out. Maybe the kernel panics are a result of the logic board they installed...especially if it was a used logic board.

And here are some other suggestions but back to the repairer and trust it was an Apple dealer?

i bought the ibook as a cheapie that needed the repair. it actually wouldn't last about 1-2 minutes without asking for the restart. so I sent the logic board to a company i found on ebay to do the repair, they also have a warranty and told me i could send it back in to double check it.

just to avoid sending it back in again and having to take apart the ibook, remove the board, send it in and wait again, put it back in again, i'm wondering if there are other possibilities that are causing it to panic.

after i got the logic board back from them and installed it in the ibook, it was actually working really well for a while. but now it stays on for about 20 mins or so then goes into panic again.

It's an iBook most them were all plagued with these problems, I remember the G3 video card issue.
I don't mean to sound negative but you would probably be better off just getting rid of it and going with a Powerbook or Macbook.

I don't think so, My opinion is that a lot of iBooks were defective, Before anyone starts jumping all over me, Let me say there are many happy iBook owners who have never had this problem with their iBooks. But anyone who has been around Macs for a while knows a lot of the iBooks had serious issues, Just like the lower ram slot problem on the 15inch Aluminum powerbook it didn't effect everyone.

anyhow good luck with it.

well i've read it was a common problem so i figured i could get some useful answers. i'm currently trying to reboot it to the older software and see if it still does it. i actually found a couple powerbook's that i was thinking about picking up, but i thought that the ibook's and powerbook's were almost the same and wer all having problems??? or were the powerbook's less prone to having the same issues as the ibook's???

I had a 14" G4 iBook 933mhz...and it worked great for me for about 3-4 years. I guess I was a lucky one...although I did have to replace the trackpad button at one point when it "crapped" out.
