You might want to backup all of your data and then try a clean fresh installation of El Capitan to see if it will fix things..

Can you tell us how long your friend owned this computer before upgrading to El Capitan? And what OS version was it running previously?

she only has the mac for about a week but problems started with el capitan. i thougth that the crash log i pasted would give a more experienced person some information on what might have caused the problem.
i also ran the hardware test and got 0 problems.

Many times kernel panics are related to hardware. And many times the "offending" hardware is either the GPU or the ram (but it can be other things). If this 17" MacBook Pro has hardware issues…then it doesn't matter what OS version it is running.

The other thing about kernel panics is…they can be very random. A computer with these problems can run fine for hours one time…and only seconds another time.

What I'm suggesting is (since ownership of this computer is very new to the person that has it now)…this computer may have had pre-existing issues…and it may not matter what OS version it is running. Hopefully the problem is the ram (since ram can be replaced). But if it's the GPU…then that can be a big problem.

- Nick

p.s. I never really trust the hardware test. It's a very rudimentary test…not nearly as good as what Apple uses at the stores for troubleshooting.

I agree with Nick. That particular model was known for GPU problems and the warranty on it was extended by Apple at one time. However, that is long over. If it is the nvidia chipset (GPU) that's causing the kernel panics, the only cure is a new logic board and that would be an uneconomical repair. It won't matter which version of OS X is installed as it will do the same thing. Hopefully your friend didn't pay very much for that machine.

Let's get a few basics of the machine to see what's going on. The panic trace says this machine has 8GB of memory. How much disk space is left on the device? Is there a particular application that was being used when this error happened? Can you launch Activity Monitor and look at the Memory tab and keep on the usage there and specifically the Swap Used field?

The only interesting thing from the Kernel Panic trace is an indication that it was trying to page some memory (I'm not even going to attempt to explain that in layman's terms..:) ), so lets see if my probing questions provide a hint as to where to look..

Also, this laptop was purchased recently. What version of OS X was it running all this time and was that version stable?
