On my late 2012, 21.5" 13,1 iMac, I upgraded to a 1Tb SSD and doubled the ram to 16Gb. It now works on the same day that you press a button. :) Anyway, I've now broken the glass and can't find out if this is replaceable on this model. I'm hoping it's not a new display that's needed.
Can anyone tell me please.

Hi Pete:

Unfortunately, on that model the glass is bonded to the display so that both have to be replaced together. From 2012 to the present models, Apple has bonded the protective glass to the display. Before 2012 they were separate and the glass could be easily replaced. You can double check that with Apple Australia to see what they say.

Thanks. Not good news but what I expected.

In case anyone was curious...here's an fixit video on how to remove the display glass on a Late 2012 iMac. Not too bad::)

Also checked out eBay here in the United States...and it looks like somewhere in the neighborhood of $275-$300 for a replacement 21.5" Late 2012 iMac display. Saw some less expensive used display glass as well.

Thanks Nick. I've seen some on ebay but am dubious about them coming from China. I know the genuine ones are made there, but 'no brand' ones wouldn't meet the same spec's. Replacing the display is no problem as I've already done it when I replaced the ram and put in an ssd. I did try ifixit USA but they had none advertised and there are none here in Oz. Looks like I'll have to live with the cracked glass.

Although the 2012 21.5"iMac is vintage, Apple still supply their AASP and ARS until their current stock is exhausted, yesterday they still had stock. The bad news is that on Monday Apple revised their spares pricing, some went down, some went up. Most displays I've checked so far went up, definitely not viable to have replaced.

In incoming repairs I have seen non Apple 21.5" displays, same manufacturer but no Apple part #. The difference being there was no sensor fitted. On the ones I've seen the sensor could be moved over.

Pete the iMac is rising to 9 years old. Maybe well be time for a later model and o the 21.5" on eBay or such as parts. Consider seriously a 27" model as they have upgradable memory via rear door hatch etc.

Steve, thanks for that but you lost me with the sensor. Is that a heat sensor... not that it really matters as it's certainly not viable.

Harry, I just can't afford or justify a new computer, being on a pension and too old for anyone to employ.

Well I'm pleased to say that I've got another display and I reckon A$150.00 was good value. I had to splash out another A$40.00 on the cutting tool and new adhesive, but I couldn't be more pleased. I took a dead imac home from the repair man and took the display off and then took the body back to him because the owner wanted the HDD out of it. :):)

Are you saying all is working fine now...and you did the replacement yourself? If so...a BIG congrats!

Anything specific you found during the replacement/procedure that might be a good tip(s) for anyone trying this in the future?

Thanks very much for the update.:)

No problem,
Yes it's all working fine now. The only tip I'd give would be to use the cutter and suction cups supplied in the toolkit. It's the same as the one you'd buy stateside from the after market spares suppliers. I've just thought: Once the cutting's been done, the adhesive is still attached at the bottom edge. I found that the strip had a little tag at each end where I could pull it off once I'd disconnected the two plugs at the top of the screen.
Just a quick question: How do I give someone a score/point?

Ps: I think I've just found it by clicking the like button. Is that right?
