Hi

I'm looking to install Garageband on a Macbook Pro running OS Mojave 10.14.6.
However when attempting to download GB from the app store apple confirms i need Mac OS 11 or later, does this mean i will have to upgrade to OS BigSur to install GB ? Could i not just install the previous version of GB ?

I'm on Catalina. Got a note today that GB was updated, but the update won't download or install because it requires Big Sur. I couldn't find a link on Apple.com to a previous version, but maybe you can do some searching there to see if an older version is still available. Apparently Apple updated GB and now it ONLY runs (in the current version) on BS.

Evidently that means Garageband 10 is no longer available for Mojave OR Catalina? But only BigSur. Mojave was the LAST version of macOS to run 32-bit apps. Apple's transition to 64-bit technology will create many issues for many musicians across the board running 32-bit plugin sample library's in all their DAWs.

Usually, if you previously had the older version, when you select Get, it will offer the older version for your OS. I know that option was still available up to High Sierra, but I haven't tried it recently.

Apple began warning everyone about 32 bit apps long before they published Mojave. As a matter of fact Apple originally stated that Mojave would require all apps to be 64 bit but then relented and waited until Catalina to implement it.

Musicians running Apple hardware have no excuse. They were forewarned long ago.

I don't understand your comment - my son seems to have this problem as well.
Some of these plugins only exist as 32-bit - period, there are no 64-bit options. It's not that anyone could have upgraded anything to 64-bit or find a 64-bit alternative.

Garageband 10 running on Mojave was fine to support those 32-bit plugins but now it sounds as if Garageband 10 for Mojave is no longer available via the normal app store link.
But maybe Randy will find one.

The point about the comment is that musicians like anyone else running Apple hardware were warned long ago about 32 bit software.

If some of the plugins as you say only exist as 32 bit, is that Apple's fault? If the developers of whatever plugins that are used have not updated or have not developed new ones for 64 bit, again, don't blame Apple.

I'm sure that the older version of Garageband still exists. Not from the app store, that's a given the way Apple updates apps there.

Here's a download link for Garageband 10.3.2:

The version available from the Mac App Store requires Big Sur and is version 4.0.

I'm not blaming Apple for that - my issue is that Apple has decided to no longer make Garageband10 available at all

I was going to post "Great - that's what the OP and I are looking for, except....
When one clicks on that link, all it does is take one to the app store and the download for Garageband 4 that requires macOS11
The really ironic part is that I tried this with my 2012 Mini which won't even run macOS11 - so Apple is offering me software not compatible with my Mac.

You're correct. I just tried it and it redirected me to the app store. It won't download for me even from there because I'm not using macOS 11. I'm still on Catalina.

I will keep looking. Perhaps Randy can find something for us?

@krs and @chscag do you already have GarageBand installed? Since you both have backups, try deleting it and attempt the download again. Unless something has changed in the last few macOS versions, the older versions would be offered when attempting the download from the users Apple ID Purchased section in the App Store, not from any other section.

Bob, I just tried it an the Purchased page also goes to the same BS version and won't download. Apple has apparently decided to force the issue on GB. It may also be that someone got overly aggressive on this and that Apple will "fix" the access at some point for older systems, but at this point, it's Big Sur or nothing.

If that's true, then I would have to call Apple, and have someone authorize my original purchase so it was compatible with my OS version. They [should} still have different app versions available for download on their servers. That is as long as I bought the older version when it was available. Since I had iLife on disc, and went straight through all versions of Mac OS X/OS X/macOS and all the app upgrades/updates, they should be available to me any time I need it.,.

That doesn't "shine" with Apple. Keep in mind that Garageband is free, not a pay app as it once was long ago. And Jake is correct as there is no way that I could find a download of the older version. It's either the BS version or nothing.

BTW, the BS version can be downloaded but if you're not running macOS 11, it won't install. I don't use or care to use Garageband but it is an important app for musicians. Apple is going to take a hit over this unless they provide a way for folks who can't run BS to obtain an older version of Garageband.

Right, but if you wanted GarageBand, and have had it installed previously, you could call Apple, and they would confirm all the information, then send you a link to get access to the older version file download that are still on their servers. Like I said, when High Sierra was out, I went and used an external drive and installed all the OS versions (10.10, 10.11, 10.12) that it could run. I wanted to install all the apps associated with my Apple ID accounts. I was able to call and get the downloads as I needed them.

I hope you're right Bob. I know that Apple will provide a download link for an older version of macOS if your machine can not run the latest.

But, how long will they do that? With the change in architecture a reality now, Apple is not going to provide older versions of anything forever. Just give them a call and ask them to provide you with a download for OS9. :p

The big question is, where now on the NET can Garageband 10 be downloaded from? apart from going through the App Store that requires you upgrade to BigSur..

Has anyone tried to contact Apple directly about that?
Seems ridiculous that Apple requires people to download their latest software which is not only still full of serious bugs but also won't run on many Macs that are otherwise still very capable machines.
