I just downloaded Libreoffice 24.8.3.2 and tried to open it, but it gives me the message below and won't open. (FYI, I get a similar message now when I try to open Neooffice, which I have used for years, not knowing it folded up a while back.) Any idea what to do to use Libre? I have searched my hard drive and no other Libre apps appear. I have also tried to unlock my personal settings, whatever that means, and I see nothing I can't unlock. Clueless. Thanks. john

Either another instance of LibreOffice is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked.
Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistencies in your personal settings. Before continuing, you should make sure user 'johnklingel' closes LibreOffice on host 'johns-iMac.local'.

First try going to this folder:
~/Library/Application Support/LibreOffice
and delete the file named ".lock"

If that file doesn't exist on your machine, try:
Go into System Settings --> Privacy and security --> Full disk access --> then add Libre Office to the Apps that have full disk access.

One final suggestion...I find FreeOffice to generally be superior to LibreOffice. Especially with regard to successfully rendering complex word processing files that you receive in Microsoft Word format .

I'm not going to use FreeOffice myself as 1) LibreOffice meets my needs, and 2) FO may not even run in Mavericks?

However, one thing I know for sure about LibreOffice is that it will open documents created in formats going back to ancient times! I attach an (incomplete) list of the WP formats and the same is true for spreadsheets, databases, etc. I found it very useful to open my System 7 Claris Works files, for example, when nothing else would. Does FO have the same support?

That's fine.

You can download older versions of FreeOffice via the Internet Archive:

I really don't know. I don't have ancient ClarisWorks files to test it with. I do know that FreeOffice has better translators for opening complex Microsoft Word files, and that's the de fact standard used in business.

Thanks for the reply. (1) No file. Could not even find a .lock file. (2) Did this, making sure the slider was to the right (blue exposed) and restarted. Same error message came up. (3) I will look for free office, and also check on my post on the LO ??/answer "forum". I still don't understand how I have been using Neooffice for years and the newer version does not work. Unfortunately, I deleted the old version I have been using after I downloaded LO as I did not want them competing; ignorance is expensive. Cheers. j

Update: I tried everything suggested, and even upgraded to OS 15.1.1, then restarted. Same error message. I threw away all things LO, downloaded it fresh, and got nowhere. I guess FreeOffice is next. I really dislike computers.

All good. Open w/ newest NeoOffice, and save as PDFs. FreeOffice won't open .odg files. Avoid NO in the future. Thanks for the help. j
