Thanks for taking the time to help!

My Macbook Air is not accepting the password of my Apple ID to log into my user account.

I updated the password on my Apple ID to reset the login on my Macbook Air.

I am able to successfully log in with my Apple ID password when starting my computer. I think this is an administrator login.

However there is a second login for a user account. I'm unable to login using my new Apple ID password. I see the following display:

"This account uses an iCloud password to log in. If you need to change the password, use another device to change it at apple id. Apple.com"

I did so using another device. My Mac is not updating my icloud password with the password of my Apple ID. I am connected to the Internet.

I have tried booting into restart mode and resetting the password in Terminal. I'm unable to select a drive to change the password.

There appears to be a problem with the password keychain. I'm unable to recover the old password and am locked out now.

I don't know what to do. Thanks for your help!

Welcome to our forums.

You need to contact Apple Support as soon as you can. Evidently, you had two factor authentication turned on which complicates things if you have either forgotten your Apple ID password. Please contact Apple for help with this as there is nothing we can do to assist you.

Thanks. I never had two-factor authentication enabled to my knowledge. I have always had only the one login.

Admin chscag's advice is excellent should be followed.

May I just point out that your Mac Log In is your Mac's Username (usually john smith) and the PW is your Admin PW - quite different from your Apple ID. Theoretically, you could purchase a Mac and use it like any other computer without an Apple ID - you wouldn't get far, but it could be done. All you need is your Admin PW.

Your Apple ID and your iCloud ID are probably the same unless, like me, you had an Apple ID before iCloud was established. Then they would be different - different email address and different PW.

Contacting Apple is best, as suggested. It would expedite matters if you could remember the Security Questions associated with your Apple ID (or iCloud ID if different).

Basically, you have to prove to Apple that you are who you say you are. If you can't recall any of the above, then you need your Social Security number (in the USA, I think. I'm in the UK); your passport details; proof of purchase of your Mac; proof of your home address (bank statements, local council taxes, anything with your home address on it.)

I mention all this in preparation for your phone call to Apple.

Good luck and best wishes.

Ian
