With Word, it used to be the case that when I typed a hyphen followed by a space, the hyphen would automatically convert to an en dash. Somehow this has got messed up and now a hyphen remains as a hyphen even after a space. Can someone pse tell me how to restore the automatic en dash?
And by the same token, where is the em dash in MS Word for Mac?
Thanks in advance.

The em dash is created if you put two dashes right after the first word and no space. Like this: em--dash. It appears after you space past the last letter in the second word. Here is the image from after that space and before I typed it in:

Can't help with the en dash. Only one I know of in Word is the em dash. I found this in the Word help:

Keyboard shortcuts in Word
Insert an em dash (—). Ctrl+Alt+Minus sign (on the numeric keypad) Insert an en dash (–). Ctrl+Minus sign (on the numeric keypad) Insert an optional hyphen. Ctrl+Hyphen (-) Insert a nonbreaking hyphen. Ctrl+Shift+Hyphen (-) Insert a nonbreaking space. Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar. Insert a copyright symbol (©). Ctrl+Alt+C. Insert a registered trademark symbol (®).
Hope that helps some.

OK - that's very helpful.
I've noted the points and this will sort me out.
