Loud fans and extremely slow macbook pro after display replacement

Hi,

My screen was failing and eventually it died. Few days ago I replaced it with a new one. Although new screen works great, my macbook runs extremely slow and fans are loud right from the start. Did anyone have similar issue? I read somewhere that thermal sensor can get an error and slow the cpu on purpose..

thanks

Absolutely no way of answering this with the info given. We have no idea:

- What model MacBook Pro this is.
- If there were any other symptoms other than the old display not working.
- If the proper replacement parts were used.
- If any mistakes were made during the repair (assembly/disassembly).
- If there were any pre-existing conditions.
- If any damage occurred during the repair.

The obvious answer is. If the proper replacement parts were used…if no mistakes or damage happened during the repair. Or if there weren't any pre-existing conditions that were present BEFORE the display was replaced. Then everything should be fine.:)

Hi Nick,

Sorry for lack of details. I know its hard to troubleshoot the issue like that. But I am just trying to see if there is anything else I can try before sending the lap top out for repair. Its a Macbook Pro mid 2012. Before replacing screen and after my previous display died, I used laptop on external monitor and it worked well. The display I ordered is new and correct model...I have replaced parts on my older laptops and replacing display assembly was one of the easiest tasks. Regardless, I was very careful and there are only few cables to connect.. I am still planing to reinstall os and see if that will help..

Thanks

Thanks for all the details & info.:)

I guess one place I would start is. Open the computer back up…disconnect the display…run the computer (like before) with an external monitor…and see if the computers performance turns to normal. If things return to normal…great. Then (if you want)...to double verify things…you could plug the new MacBook Pro display back in…and see if performance slows down.

If this is what happens…then what this would say to me is...no damage was done to the computer during the repair. And MAYBE…you were sent the incorrect display for your model MacBook Pro…or maybe this display (if it is the correct part)…is defective in some way.

By the way…just reread your first post…and saw the loud fan part. Loud fans or fans at max. rpm…usually indicate some sort of hardware issue.

Just for the heck of it (before taking the computer apart)…try doing an SMC Reset:

Nick,

Good news! ..and some bad too. The good news is, I found the issue! Attaching photo as well. After testing old screen against new and checking all connections I narrowed it down to the (I believe its camera cable) cable circled in the picture. When its unplugged everything works great. New display works great and computer runs smooth as it used to. With that cable being unplugged, I also lost the camera. Both Skype and Photo Booth says there is no camera connected, that how I figure its camera connection. Is this cable responsible for more than just a camera? Cause if I get partial refund on display might as well live with this. Not a big deal i guess, since I never used it besides Skype..But do you know anything about this? Could this be something that may be resolved in OS?....Any feedback on this? Thanks in advance!!

ps..if it helps, if I plug that cable on the old screen it works well too. So its not my laptop but rather new display's.

Thanks for all the info…very interesting. Glad you found a "sort of" solution. Interesting that the camera & computer performance are fine with the old display…and not the new display. Still seems to me that there's something wrong with the new display…or it's not the correct part. Since as you proved…the old display works fine (except no video)…but new display not 100% fine. Thus as you concluded…the rest of the computer is "good to go".

By the way…with that camera cable unplugged on the new display…does the high fan rpm issue disappear as well?

If the new display was 100% operational or it was 100% the correct part…then everything should be fine. I don't know where you got the replacement display from…but how reliable of a place do you feel this source was (trustworthy, competent, knowledgeable, etc.)? If good…maybe see if you can return the display & get another. If not so good…maybe they sent the wrong part.

If you can live without the camera…then maybe you can skip doing anything further. But if it's not the correct display…what do you do if something else happens "down the line"…when the return policy for the part is expired. I would want it to work 100%…and since you did mention using Skype..why not have it working (just in case)…since it's kind of hard to find a good external camera to use with Apple computers.

Please keep us updated. Thanks,

- Nick

Yes, the issue with fans went away too. I got display from overseas straight from manufacturing company. So no , I cant say how reliable it is. But I will write them and see if I can get partial refund and keep the screen cause I paid for it much less than I would have paid it at the apple repair...So there is a risk as you can see... Will keep you posted..Another solution would be to take the camera from old display and put in the new one..But that involves much difficult repair task..Not something I would do...

Thanks

Another solution that you might consider... instead of messing with the camera by removing the cable, just install a fan control program and control the fans that way. Macs Fan Control is a program that uses the temp sensors to control fan speeds and is very effective. Give it a try.

chscag,

Thanks for your input. I was actually thinking of it the other day....however, another problem is that when the camera being plugged in OS slows down drastically. However I read somewhere that because thermal sensor go wild it slows down processor on purpose as though to prevent any damage to computer...or something in between those lines....So than I guess I would try and see if slowing down those fans will help to put the working speed back to normal state...Another thing I am curious about is.....could the camera in new display be a newer model or something, and I just need an update or newer version of OS??

update: just tried few things. with camera cable being plugged in - fans are full speed and Macs Fan Controls seem unable to take control of fans saying that sensors working incorrectly. Also, I launched photo booth and the camera on new display actually works. So its just causing my laptops sensors to act weird on me. Hopefully this info helps a bit.
