If you add the "/" to a path, any additional data appended will get sent to the server as parameters.

Take a look at the URL you are visiting right now to view this thread. It says "mac-forums.com/threads/mac-mail-imap-path-index.377988/"

If I had saved the base URL without the ending slash, then "threads" would have been added to ".com" to make it an invalid URL.

The same thing holds true for folder paths.
