I have an iMAC running Sierra 10.12.6. I've been using the Bose Companion 5 multi-media speaker system for over a year. Yesterday, it just stopped working. It has power, and it is displayed in the sound tab under system preferences, but I have no sound. Internal speakers are working and I checked all the stupid user stuff (volume is turned up, no headphones plugged in). No reset button on the Bose system (that I know of). Any ideas??

How does the Bos system connect to the iMac? Is it USB, Bluetooth, or other? Have you restarted?

I'm pretty sure those Bose Companion systems are USB. I'd be tempted to try them using a different source and try some different USB speakers on the iMac to isolate the problem.

Without knowing which device is at fault, it's difficult to diagnose.

Hey Kevin:

Welcome back. Long time..... ;)

Thanks. Been having a busy time, and hooked up with a gang of lunatics on a music forum, where I spend most of my time. I've been looking in, but haven't found any questions I can have a stab at. I'll probably be around a bit more, looking specifically for music, Mac and network problems. That seems to be where I'm headed.

I have a slightly older version of your system; been using it for years.

Every now and again, it just stops working - like yours.

You may think this silly, but I found that if you turn the Bose power off - leave for a couple of minutes - turn power on again, they return to normal.

Remember to check that the volume adjuster is on green rather than red. I've been caught out by that too!
