I have a macbook air with el capitan osx. The computer locked up while using Safari, so I forced reboot by holding down power key. Upon restarting, it goes to the blank white screen, chimes and then 2 seconds later repeats. It is in an infinite loop of some sort. I have tried all the command ** options upon restarting with no luck. Anyone run into this and have a solution?

I was going to open the case and disconnect the battery to reset and clear everything, but I unfortunately do not have the 5 star screwdriver.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Unfortunately I have tried both of those already with no luck. I need to get the proper screwdriver to take the unit apart and disconnect the battery.

Is there a Lowes or Home Depot near your home? Both stores carry the type of screwdriver you need to remove the battery.

Tried the shift key trick also with no luck.

I don't think the hardware stores carry that screw driver. It's not a torx, it's a 5 point driver. Let me know if i'm wrong on that.

As above.... Lowes or Home Depot. Also, Ace Hardware stocks them if there is a store near you.

Why???

What extra benefit are you expecting to obtain other than opening your Mac and disconnecting its battery???

I can see no benefit in disconnecting the battery.
After the startup chime press an hold the option key until safe mode. Do not log in just restart and see how it is after that.

Read in one of the Apple forums that disconnecting the battery did something to reset the unit and clear the memory.

I tried the option key also and no luck. No matter what key press you do you just get a blank screen and a repeated chime every 2 seconds. Never see an apple logo.

And then I guess the macOS Recovery boot doesn't work either???

To start up from macOS Recovery, hold down Command (⌘)-R immediately after turning on or restarting your Mac. Release when you see the Apple logo.

Tried that also. No matter what key combination you do it just goes right to the chime and remains on the blank screen.

Does anyone know what kind of hardware problem this could be? Memory? Hard drive? How do you diagnose this?

As with all problems that cannot be diagnosed by the device itself you need to be able to boot from another source. Either a bootable installer or external USB Drive. It is one of the primary reasons we encourage users to make bootable clone system backups and USB thumb drive versions of OS installers.
As part of a process of elimination they are very helpful to determin if you are dealing with a software or hardware issue.
They also offer diagnosis and repair functions independently.

Do you have a USB keyboard you can test with? Maybe the MBA keyboard is not working?

Now that's an interesting and valid suggestion and worth checking out.
