I bought a brand new 16" MacBook Pro 1 TB on Tuesday, When I am typing it seems to freeze for a split second then carry on. So yesterday I went back to the apple store I bought it from and they decided to give me a replacement. And now on the replacement I am facing the same issue. I have tried doing a SMC and PRAM reset but still no difference, and also when I got the replacement I set up the computer as a new machine and manually transferred all my files over, so there was no time machine backup etc.

I booked a genius bar appointment again for today, they advised me to reinstall Big Sur and try the computer with a fresh install. I still get the exact same issue with a proper fresh install....

When I first got them they were running macOS Catalina and I updated them to Big Sur - 11.4 .

Can the 16" run Big sur? My 2019 iMac runs it fine and that only has an i5.

Any suggestions would very much be appreciated!

Open Activity Monitor and see what is taking up a lot of CPU time. If it is a process called "md" then it is Spotlight indexing the drive. If you restored a lot of files, that can take some time as it runs in the background. It can, if it's taking a lot of CPU, cause the machine to be sluggish for a couple of days until the indexing is finished.

This was a completely fresh install of Big sur, I did try it in safe mode and the computer was horrendously slow to the point of being unusable.. the issue was there but it took an age to even open the launchpad.

md was nowhere to be seen. The biggest thing using it was Activity monitor but thats just because I was using it. I even tried typing then when the lag occurred going back onto Activity monitor to see if something else was running in the background causing it to happen. No luck sadly :(

Have begun having this issue lately too. Plus:
  • Became concerned about how absurdly hot it gets. Read that 'it's normal'.
  • Fan goes crazy with the above when barely doing anything
  • Became concerned about terrible performance using Adobe CC. Read that 'unfortunately, it's common'.
  • Unable to connect to WiFi after a recent OS update. Read 'it happens, try these fixes...' (Seemed to work again eventually without them)
  • Reset SMC multiple times and PRAM
  • Stopped using Chrome as heard it's a resource hog
  • Installed Clean My Mac and deleted loads of items... no real noticeable improvement...
  • Activity Monitor/CMM show massive RAM usage when barely using any apps (currently just Firefox and Signal)
  • Just checked and no md in AM
This machine has been the most expensive/worst I've owned in my computer-using life and constantly feels like something isn't quite right, somewhere (even deleting a few characters just now, following a restart, it lagged...) or, worst case, just starts grinding to a near-halt.

Installing apps like this can be the source of the issues (anti-virus apps too)...if you don't know 100% that the app is 100% safe to install. Other items that may have been installed in the past could be the source of the issues as well.

I'm also betting some inadvertent clicking on things in the past on the internet have resulted in unknown items getting installed. This includes clicking on things not familiar with in emails as well.

The slowness is very likely...NOT a result of the macOS...NOT the Apple hardware itself...NOT the installation of legitimate software applications. The problems are very likely a result of user error (not being careful when using the internet...and clicking on things that shouldn't be clicked on).

I know you may not want to hear this;)...but it's the truth.:) Happens all the time to experienced & less experienced computer users.

What's the solution? Attempting to identify & uninstall the problematic items would be the first things to try. If this isn't successful...a fresh install of the macOS may be the only solution.

Thanks for the response Nick.

Yeah I've been trying to avoid going nuclear with the fresh install as it's such a PITA and I'm constantly needing to work etc.

Maybe the time's finally arrived though...
