Sounds like the hard drive has failed.

Either way, I had tried a USB stick with Yosemite on it but it would not boot. I am trying to install Snow leopard from an original disk but when I power on, I hold down the C key immediately after the chime, wait a little, the apple logo appears bot spinning wheel? Prior to this, I did when attempting the Internet recovery see the HDD showing in Disk Utility so I am thinking the HDD is not damaged? In disk utility I am seeing in the left pane

251GB APPLE SSD SD02

Macintosh HD

under the Macintosh HD I am seeing

disk1

If I am correct you have a 2015 Retina Macbook Pro 13". You can't run Snow Leopard on your 2015 MBPro because it is an older version of OS X and won't have the firmware your newer mac needs.

How did you try to use the USB drive with Yosemite? It won't boot like a Windows system will. When you started the MBPro hold down the "C" key and select the USB.

Also to do an internet install by starting your MBP and at the same time hold down the Command + R keys. Here is more details on how:

When I hold down the C key after or on the chime the screen stays blank for a minute or so then the flashing question mark appears. The internet install is not working.

As Lisa has already told you, that MBPro will not boot from any SL Mac OS X 10.6.8 volume. Period!!!

What happens if you just try and boot normally from your internal boot drive?

If that doesn't work and you need to do a OS X reinstall, you'll need to boot holding down the command + r keys and use the reinstaller etc. when it loads.

Look at it this way Mike. As a rule of thumb there is no going backwards to an operating system older than the computer.
