Macbook Pro very slow and won't boot in recovery mode or from USB

Hi Guys,

I have a late 2016 MacBook Pro running the latest OS High Sierra. Earlier today I was running some of the CleanMyMac maintenance scripts including the reindex spotlight script. After I did this everything was running very slowly so I used a sudo terminal command to disable spotlight. This didn't speed up anything so I rebooted (which took ages) so decided the maintenance scripts must have screwed something up.

I tried to boot to recovery drive (CMD + R) but it wouldn't boot past the apple loading screen. I then tried to reset the NVRAM (CMD + OPT + P + R) and tried to boot to recovery again, again with no success.

Lastly, I created a bootable USB from another MBP, booted my broken Mac to boot menu (OPT) and selected the USB drive. Again, this will not get past the apple loading screen.

I literally have no idea what to try next, any help would be most appreciated!!!

Cheers

Andy

A warm welcome to Mac-Forums, Andy.

CleanMyMac is not recommended here and may be responsible for all that's happened to your Mac since you used it. It is a potent app that used with extreme caution may be harmless, and even helpful on occasion; but it embodies a lot of actions which can cripple a Mac.

Can't prove cause and effect; but from your story, it seems more than likely.

A crucial question which relates to any possible solution: do you have a current Time Machine or Cloned Backup?

Please post back.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately (and stupidly) I don’t have a time machine back up or anything similar since my old time capsule broke a while back. All my documents etc are backed up on iCloud so I’m not so worried about wiping everything- I just can’t get it to boot into recovery or anything similar! I’ve since tried internet recovery, again with no joy!

Thanks

Try an SMC reset. Turn off, and disconnect from the mains power, and leave it for twenty minutes, then connect up and reboot. NBext suggestion is download a copy of HS on the nother MBP, make a bootable thumb drive using say DiskmakerX, boot from that, format the drive and do a clean install. From your description of things sounds like CMM has removed some vital file/s which it is known for. Your Mac only needs Onyx for maintenance, and it is free.

Thanks Harry, I will try the SMC rest! I have tried using a bootable thumb drive, but I'm unable to boot from that, just gets stuck right at the end of the apple loading screen! I just find it odd that it will boot up (but run very slowly) in a standard boot, but all recovery boots fail!

Thanks for the advice on Onyx; I've been using CMM for years and never had a problem- but I supose it on;y takes one time!

Thanks

Andy

Turn off, and disconnect from the mains power, and leave it for twenty minutes, then connect up and reboot.

And also press and hold the power switch for 5-10 seconds to drain everything.

So I tried these suggestions and none works so I broke and took it to the Apple store. They were convinced it was software but couldn’t get their network image to load into it to wipe the HD so took it in over night. Today they have told me a logic board needs replacing. Not 100% on this but I guess I should trust them?! It will be free apparently, but take 7 days which is a little annoying!

Any thoughts?

Thanks again!

I'd say you don't have much choice if you don't trust them (and I don't know why you wouldn't) and also want a working Mac back and at no additional charge.

And I guess it could depend on where you live and various shipping involved and the actual alternate repair place etc. if needed.

BTW: Did you have extended Apple Care in effect?

Replacing the logic board on a late 2016 MBP is a fairly drastic and expensive repair. It sounds like the Apple diagnostics must have found something - perhaps bad memory or bad graphics, both of which are surface soldered to the logic board. It also indicates they're sending it to depot repair to swap out the logic board. Since it's free, I would of course let them do it, however, make sure you go over the returned unit very closely when you get it back. And hopefully you have a current backup you can use to restore your data.

Although it may not have been the issue I would take great care using the Maintenance Scripts in CMM unless you are very confident in what you are doing. I am an exponent of CMM and I too have been using it for years but I tend to steer away from it's more advanced features favoring OnyX for those process'. I wonder why you used CMM to re index the Spotlight Script. Were you having problems prior to that?

I don't think CleanMyMac was the cause of his problems even though I personally would not recommend using it. It was probably a coincidental hardware fault that has caused the difficulty. I do not know anything at all about the scripts that CMM runs but it's likely that it was unnecessary.
