Hello, Comrades!

You can find a few websites which provide serial number decoding (the one which is completely free is everymac.com btw)

I wanted to get a list of the serial numbers and build a correspondence table where you could easily identify model and family (it looks like it is coded into last 4 digits).

I will use this data to help my customers identify their macs on my website, and I am willing to share it with anyone on request.

My current method is this:

I receive about 50 macs for repair monthly and store all serials in the table (currently it's a few hundred long). Then I look them up on one of the available databases and search for the similarities.

I came up with a few correspondences already: any serial which ends with DRVC is a mid-12 MacBook Air 13".

I am looking for any relevant input on the matter (serial number arrays or any ready-made solutions are mostly welcome :) )

To the best of my knowledge…Everymac.com does not decode "serial numbers". A serial number is a unique number to each individual computer. Maybe you're referring to "model number" or some sort of other number.

p.s. "Hello Comrades"…that's a good one! Not a greeting many folks use in the United States!;)

Nor Down Under lol! A comrade running his own business?

And Apple will not part with the bulk serial number details. Suggest your clients download Mactracker.

The serial numbers are sure unique but not random. First three digits are reserved for the factory code (that's why the majority of serials starts with C02), then year and week number follows, then consequential assigned number. The last bit - a four digit array is the model-modification. You may check this out yourself if you would like:
C0273PXSDRVC
C027ZZOPDRVC
C17J2M5HDRVC

These are all one model

C02K5K5XFFT0
C02K5KP1FFT0
C02K40LFFFT1

Here is even more compelling example: first two is one model-modification, and the last one is same model, but with a faster CPU (0 is less powerful)

Of course, Apple holds the database which is available to authorised service providers, and also on apple.com website, but I don't think that at least 10 sites which I know of is using that database and apple just don't do anything about it for years.

BTW, how do you call fellow comrades in your America?

I don't doubt anything you're saying.:) All I was saying was…I don't think that Everymac.com provides any info regarding serial numbers.;)

Here's the link to their serial number lookup: http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/

I think they have built the database themselves, as there are few existing serials which you can't look up with this method.

That's kinda fascinating. I'll have to see what it says about my serial number. It sort of reminds me of those sites where you enter a car's VIN to decipher info about the car. Here's an example with the car I want for my first car: http://vinfreecheck.com/decode_vin/JF1GG68572G807399

If it helps, but please note:

I believe he used to have various options for others to access his database, but maybe that was some years ago. I leave the user to check for themselves. Comrade.. ;D

Ok you're right. That's a little nugget of info I didn't think that Everymac.com provided. In any case…I look up Apple computers serial numbers fairly often…and as member pm-r mentioned…there are dedicated websites that do Apple serial number lookups. Here's one I use pretty often:

Ok so I just looked up my S/N on the site that Nick said, and found some pretty fascinating stuff about my MacBook. A lot of it I already knew, but there was a lot I didn't! It was pretty cool.
