Currently running macOS Ventura (v13.4.1) on my 14" MacBook Pro, and I had the screen saver set to random for awhile, but then I started to notice that none of the photo-based screen savers would EVER be selected...like never.

The random screen saver seemed to cycle through every other screen saver EXCEPT for the ones that use photos.

When I manually select one of the photo-based screen savers, they run just fine.

Has anyone else run into this?

I really like the photo-based screen savers, but would also like some variety...

Hey Sean! Hope you are doing well today.

Did you check your screen saver setting? Check your screen saver setting to make sure that photo based screen savers are included in the random selection. And Sometimes resetting the screen saver preference might help resolve any configuration issue. Hope this helps let me know if you still having issues.

Thanks for the tip!

Can you please clarify how you ensure the photo screen savers are included in the random selection?

Hi Sean,
How are you today?

Glad you found the tip helpful! To ensure photo screen savers are included in the random selection, follow these steps:

Right-click on your desktop and select "Personalize." Click on "Lock screen" on the left sidebar. Scroll down and click on "Screen saver settings." In the "Screen Saver Settings" window, choose "Photos" from the drop-down menu. Customize the settings as per your preference. Click "OK" to save the changes.

If you encounter any issues, try resetting the screen-saver preferences. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Tim.

Thanks, Tim!

Not sure if it's the latest changes to macOS, but I do not have a Personalize option when I right-click the desktop...

I went into the screen savers settings, and there is no Photos option...

And oddly enough, the random screen saver doesn't seem to have any options.

Any idea where this setting might be in Ventura...?

Thanks again for the help!

Sean

Hi Sean, Sorry for the confusion
To enable a photo screensaver on macOS, follow these steps:

Click on the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen.
Select "System Preferences" from the drop-down menu.
In the System Preferences window, click on "Desktop & Screen Saver."
In the "Screen Saver" tab, you'll see a list of available screensavers on the left.
Scroll down the list and look for the screensaver named "Ken Burns."
Select "Ken Burns," and then click on the "Source" drop-down menu on the right.
From the "Source" menu, choose "Photos" to use your own photo library for the screensaver.
Once you select "Photos," you can customize the settings, including the album or folder from which the photos will be used for the screensaver.

As for the random screensaver not having any options, some screensavers on macOS are simple and don't come with extensive customization options. The "Ken Burns" screensaver, for example, simulates panning and zooming on your photos, but it doesn't have many configurable settings.

I hope this helps you set up your photo screensaver on macOS. If you have any further questions or encounter any issues, feel free to let me know.

Best regards,
Tim.

Hi, Tim! And thanks again for the reply...

Sorry for the confusion on my part - I am able to set up the photo screen savers on my MBP. No problem there!

The issue I'm having is that the photo screen savers aren't used when I choose the random screen saver option. The random screen saver seems to cycle through all the other screen savers except for the photo ones.

Any ideas on how to rectify that?

I don't know why those photos are not working for you with your screensaver, but a work around suggestion would be to export or save the pictures you want to use in a separate folder, and then use your screensaver preferences to use the photos in that folder and change them out whatever setting you set the change to.

I don't see why that would not work and get around the problem.

As for the Settings not being available, you need to set all the screen savers options individually. Maybe there are setting to enable Photos screen saver options there. Did you select folders or the Photoslibrary in each of the "images" screen saver options?

Thanks for the tip! I double-checked, and they are all pointing to my Photos library. They work fine individually...just don't get included in the Random screen saver...

I will reach out to Apple Support...

I posted on the Apple forums, and a few users confirmed that this has been the case in macOS for awhile...

I submitted an improvement request to Apple, but I'm not entirely hopeful...

Thanks for the help!
