Just thought I'd get in first for a change. macOS 14 Sonoma was released yesterday and available for all users. Just one little word of caution regarding something I always do prior to a major macOS Upgrade.
Check first if there are any Updates pending for your existing macOS before Upgrading.
You may well see, as I did below this little notification:

Screenshot 2023-09-27 at 8.38.49 am.png

I was not aware of this update to macOS Ventura until I checked for the Sonoma Upgrade.

So, being the patient type, I will apply the update first and backup before performing the Sonoma Upgrade and I respectively suggest everyone do the same.

PS: I also noted there were 10 application updates which I always consider worth doing before a macOS Upgrade.

I beat you to that installation Rod. I think it appeared right after the event last week and I jumped on it. It hasn't been too hard to get used to though I had an advantage: I have been running the Sonoma, public beta.

I think I accidentally triggered the Stage Manager feature, and love it as an alternative to Spaces.

I've already heard from two users that they upgraded to Sonoma and the trackpad on their MacBook stopped working.

So folks may not want to be so quick to upgrade.

Mav Mini M1 done, and I do like clicking on a part of the decktop to get a full view of the desktop.

Upgraded to Sonoma. No issues on my M1 MBP. Everything works fine. Haven't really had time to explore yet.

Some thoughts -
1. Tapping the desktop and having everything open clear out is interesting. Haven't figured out how it can be useful but when I am at work with two other monitors attached it can be entertaining.
2. Really cool new screen savers! Love the Northern Lights one and others.
3. I did discover my Perixx mouse did not work initially. I use a OWC hub and plug the wireless receiver into it. The mouse would not respond until I removed the wireless receiver from the hub and plugged it back in. Now it is working fine.
That's it for now!

Probably a dumb question, but can I go directly to Sonoma from Big Sur?

According to this list Sonoma will run on MacBook Pro models from 2018 and later. If the Mac in question is the one in your signature you should be good to go.

If your Big Sur installation is stable and running well you should be able to go from Big Sur to Sonoma without installing other OS versions first.

Thanks much! Yes, it's running smoothly with no issues. And yes, mine is a 2019 MBP 16". The Sonoma upgrade is in my Software Update, so I wanted to make sure before I pulled the trigger!

That setup must be a real beast with that much memory. Color me jealous. Next time you go on a budget-busting tech buying spree adopt me first. 🙏

I might have some questions for you, upgraded yesterday afternoon but haven't had time to play around with it yet.
PS. No problem with my trackpad Randy, but I'm on a silicon Mac if that makes any difference.

haha - I splurged in 2020, needed a beast to start working from home and just bit the bullet!

Even though I have been running the beta I haven't really explored as many of the new features as I'd hoped to. I'll try to answer what I can.

I've always liked that feature too. Previously you could do it by holding down the Option and Command Keys while clicking on the desktop.

When I am editing something (often a photo) to go on a forum, then I save it to the desktop, some forums will not take photos directly out of Apple photos. I do not keep items on the desktop, but is an easy transition before filing.

Good to hear. But I've now heard from three users who lost the use of their trackpad after upgrading to Ventura.

A new folder has appeared after installing Sonoma.

Daily backups are carried out by Carbon Copy Cloner and in the list of folders backed up to an EHD a new one has appeared - MobileSoftwareUpdate. This appeared after installing Sonoma yesterday and it contains restore.log which was updated this morning when I switched my Silicon iMac off and on again.

The folder is located at Macintosh HD/System/Volumes/Macintosh HD and the restore log contains:-

1eec2e080 : Brain operations will run at their default (UTILITY) QOS
16faaf000 : Running event handler at QoS 0x11
16faaf000 : Running event handler at QoS 0x19

1e2d19300 : Will open restore file at: /System/Volumes/Update/restore.log
1e7ec5300 : CleanupPreparePath main() started
1e7ec5300 : setSystemTargetUUID will use / as the target

1e7ec5300 : Found update volume: LPAPFSVolume: Update, Mount: /System/Volumes/Update
1e7ec5300 : Will open restore file at: /System/Volumes/Update/restore.log

This folder, as far as I am aware, did not exist prior to Sonoma. Any ideas?

What I found doing a search for that problem was several instances mentioning the same problem when upgrading to Ventura, Monterey and Big Sur. In most cases it seemed a switch off/on or SMC reset fixed the issue. That does sound logical after a System Upgrade an I’m not sure what the devices in question where upgraded from in every case. Couldn’t find any references for Sonoma though. Maybe that was my search terms or engine?
