macOS while sleeping stopped waking up from Apple Magic wireless keyboard and touchpad

The last several times I come back while the MacBook is asleep, and tap the Apple Magic wireless keyboard keys like normal to get the log in screen, nothing happens. The Mac stays asleep. Because there's no lights on the keyboard, I can't tell if that's even registering my presses. The only way I can get them to wake up the Mac now is to plug them in. Turning them off and on doesn't work. Because the MacBook's lid is closed and under a monitor stand, it's a pain to try to wake it up through its power button.

Now what? The wireless devices are at 85% without me having charged them other than the few seconds it took while plugged in to wake the Mac.

This is super-frustrating. I don't need yet another random bug in some random piece of electronics taking more time out of my day.

What MBP? What version of macOS are you running on it? When you do get to wake it up does it operate normally or has it restarted? Check Console to see if there are any crash reports.

I use a Magic keyboard and trackpad with my Mac Mini and a tap of the trackpad always wakes up my mini.

Wireless keyboards and mice do not work when your MBP is in clamshell mode. As far as I remember when I used clamshell mode I always had to use my wired keyboard and mouse to wake up the machine.

It may be different with BT, but I suspect you still need to be wired.

No, it shouldn't matter. Unless some non Apple brand keyboard/mouse/trackpad.

Assumption #1: if the MBP has had its lid closed (as stated) for sleep mode, doesn't just lifting the lid of the it - even slightly - wake it? That has been my experience. Peripherals can take perhaps a further 15-30 seconds to get past their yawns and make ready to work.
Assumption #2: if the MBP has its lid left open while 'asleep', tapping the Space bar wakens it. Sometimes one needs to hold the Space bar down for 2-3 seconds.

I hardly ever use a trackpad, so can only suggest that perhaps some extra finger pressure, or sweeping back and forth with four fingers, might do the job.

Unplugging and replugging any sort of active USB device, eg. a mouse or keyboard dongle, into the nearest port should also wake the MB. Just be careful not to unplug any mounted device such as a flash drive.

A parallel issue I have with a 2018 Mini is the USB, Wireless and Bluetooth peripherals responding (usually) to R-click (not L) or Space Bar only, otherwise the Mini OS (Mojave) just keeps on snoring.

MacBook Pro 2019 with Big Sur. It operates fine after it wakes up. I saw no crash reports in Console about wakes.

That's not true. It was working fine before. It's back to working fine again, and I have no idea why or exactly when it stopped working or started working again. I'm using the latest Apple wireless long keyboard and their latest Magic Trackpad (2?), and they're both Bluetooth.

Lifting the lid wakes it, as I intimated in my original post, but that's a pain because it's under a monitor stand, and moving it just so I can open the lid randomly is very inconvenient for my desk area.

I don't leave the lid open, it's closed while I work at my desk, tucked under a monitor stand. I have no use for its lid being open because it's just a waste of space at the desk. It's only useful open for using the laptop elsewhere. If I take the laptop elsewhere, I generally don't bring the wireless keyboard and trackpad, because those generally only make sense on a big desk with multiple monitors for my job (and it's a work laptop only). So the issue is basically in an all-or-nothing situation.

I prefer the trackpad now since it's less work for my hand/fingers generally than a mouse, and has been more accurate and responsive. I tried extra pressure and things like that, but nothing worked outside of plugging them in or opening the lid. Things work fine now though for some reason.

Maybe I could try this next time it happens... I didn't try specific keys or combinations last time.
