I have complained directly to Apple in the past. And I've posted here before also.

Mail app does not capitalize the first letter of a word in a sentence. iOS does on iPhone and iPad. This text box I'm now typing in, on this forum, does. Most word processors do. (Yes, I know how to use the Shift key.)

I'm not sure if it is a big coding writing job in Mail but I'm guessing it is not.

Now I'm wondering if the "new" Mail app in El Capitan will capitalize the first letter in a sentence?
I'm guessing it will not.

Is Apple just stubborn about this for some odd reason?

If you agree with me complain to Apple.

The text box on Mac-Forums doesn't capitalize the first word in the sentence -- you may be writing your post in iOS, which of course does. Most word processors don't actually do this, again, on the Mac, though I think Microsoft does (having capitulated to the "texting culture").

A quick test on El Capitan GM suggests that no, Apple still "forces" us to use the shift key.

I see Chas_m beat me to it. Apple hasn't added this feature in Mail. I suppose it might be possible with either AppleScript or Automator but that seems to me to be overkill compared to just hitting the Shift key.

MS Word 2011 for Mac does capitalize the first letter. MS Outlook 2011 for Mac also capitalizes the first letter in Composing. Everything is overkill compared to just hitting the Shift key. I type fast and got used to MS Outlook doing the capitalizing for me. I guess it's "hip" and "cool" not to capitalize in the modern "texting culture" but I believe we should all be sending and receiving emails, messages, and all correspondence, correctly. But, I am still curious as to why Apple has capitalization working in iOS. And why bother having Spell Check in Mail?

MS Word 2011 for Mac does capitalize the first letter.

Maybe there's a user definable setting for this. Every computer based word processing program I've ever used (by default) did not capitalize the first letter (need to use the shift key). This includes Microsoft Office 2011 (just tried it). But like I said…maybe there's a user definable setting for this.:)

I suspect the reason for the difference is that in IOS it takes two taps to make a capital letter, so they "automated" it there. But the level of effort to use shift on a keyboard is not as aggravating as having to tap twice on a tiny screen (think iPhone, not iPad). And as an aside, IF Apple does adopt some sort of automatic capital on first letter, I'll start a protest movement against it. I happen to like the control of using the shift key to accomplish that simple task when -I- want it, not when Apple thinks it's appropriate. One major reason is that is in IOS, although initial caps are sometimes nice, try entering two caps at the front of a sentence, or in the middle even. For a certain function in my church I abbreviate Community Group as CG in emails a lot, and that auto-cap function insists on making it Cg at the front of the sentence or Cgs for plural anywhere. It seems Apple decided that if you use ALL upper case in the middle of a sentence, it's fine, but if you try to add that "s" to make it plural, CGs is totally unacceptable. Very annoying.
