Make my phone ignore my watch

Apple ASSUMES that if you are wearing your watch, you want to be subtle and glance at it rather than look at your phone when a txt msg arrives. This is NOT necessarily the case for me. I'd like to hear my phone beep (don't ask) when messages come in as it does when your watch is on a charger out of bluetooth range. Is there a setting on either the phone or the watch that will provide this?
