I clicked on "Malwaretips.com" a few weeks ago but did not download or purchase any software. Since then, I get a new tab pop up that leads directly to "Malwaretips.com". I tried to delete all traces of this site such as cookies, catche, etc, but it persists. I know that this software is to eliminate problems with viruses, pop ups etc, but Malwaretips.com is the popup that I do not want and I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I use Firefox 37.0.1 and Apple 10.6.8.
Can anyone give me a clue how to get Malwaretips.com from opening a new tab on my browser? So far there have been no other problems and none of the virus software I use can find anything wrong. I'm stumped..

Malwaretips is a forum site. I am curious as to how you got a new tab pop up from them as that would not be the normal thing to happen.

Anyway, I suggest you download and run Adware Medic. It is free and if you did pickup something that should clean it out.

AdwareMedic

I am not that familiar with Firefox but I would suggest you open the preferences (three little grey horizontal lines n upper right corner - then select preferences). Under the general tab make sure where is says, "When Firefox starts" that "show my home page" is selected and in the box below the correct home page url is listed.

Also, I suggest for future browsing, under add-ons, adding to your extension Ghostery and AdBlock Plus.

And why are you running multiple virus softwares? If you must run one ClamXav is about the only one recommended on this forum. But really it isn't necessary and more than one can create problems.

Lisa,
Thanks for the info. I have no idea why I get the additional tab. It's not the primary tab that will open with my homepage or where ever I left off previously. It's always the next tab even though I did not have a second tab open previously. I'll check out AdwareMedic. I do have Firefox set to open my homepage at startup. The new tab may show up on my browser if I switch between my E.Mail program (Microsft Entourage) and the browser. It can also show up if I switch between I Photo, I Tunes, etc., so it's not an M/S problem on my I Mac. I have a couple of Virus Programs downloaded but I only run VirusBarrier. I'll look into ClamXav too..
Thank you for the reply.

The very fact malwaretips.com recommends removing AdWareMedic and using Avast! i.m.h.o makes them very suspicious and unknowledgeable. Avast! is a real resource hog.

O.K., so here's what I finally found. My profound thanks to Lisa.

I checked the preferences for Firefox and found that "Malwaretips.com" had added itself to my home page start up instructions. It was behind my home page after the original url for my home page. I tried over and over to simply delete the HTTP://www.Malwaretips.com from behind the original home page info and I finally had to manually write the homepage address in and go to the home page and then tell the preferences to make the current page my home page again.
Malware tips hung in there and would not let go...It's finally gone now.!!
So we'll see if it goes away for good now. I will never visit that site again.
Thanks for the tips and clues..

I believe we can conclude from this little episode that "Malwaretips.com" is in fact malware and should be avoided! ;)

I would suggest you ditch the other virus programs too. Running one is a resource hog. Running two is a train wreck. They will conflict if they are running in the background and cause problems. The one I recommended for those who have to have one is ClamXav because it is a stand-a-lone. You have to manually run it. I use to use it when I was going through Windows-detox and just had to have one as a security blanket so to speak.
