It would certainly help us if you first told us which application you were trying to do this on! We're not very good at guessing..... ;)

So sorry! I am working in Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac.

When I highlight { PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT }, right click, and select toggle, it changes it to a numerical page number. However, when I save the document and then re-open, it all converts back to { PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT } .

I am at my wits end. The same thing is happening when I generate a TOC. It gives me { TOC \o "1-3" }. When I highlight and right click on toggle, it generates the table of contents. But again, once I save and close and then reopen, the code reappears.

This is a dissertation and the chair will be reading the electronic file. It cannot have these codes it ... he needs to see the text.

Please help if you can.

Using Word in MS Office 2011:

Make sure the ribbon is showing, then click on the "Document Elements" tab on the ribbon. Then click on "footer", click on the first box [text] [text] [text] and then go to the first page where your footer appears. You should now be able to delete the footer on the first page including any page number that appears. You can do the same thing on each subsequent page or use "all pages".

After all the footers are removed, go back to the ribbon and select "page number". You should now be able to select where to start the page numbers, location, and type.

The style and layout of your TOC can likewise be chosen from the "Document Elements" tab. There are 10 styles and layouts to choose from. Just choose the one that best fits the requirements of your dissertation. Since we can't see your dissertation layout, you'll just have experiment.

thanks for the information, although it did not help. I did some further research and found that if I go the Word preferences, select View, and de-select field codes, the problem disappears!

Thank you again for your assistance.

You didn't tell us that you had "Field Codes" turned on. Yes, that certainly would give the effect you were experiencing. Anyway, glad you got it fixed and good luck with your dissertation. :)
