I plan to replace my old Intel-based Macbook Pro with a new 14” M1 MBP but am concerned about running native mode MSoft Office apps, primarily Excel, Word, and, to a lesser extent, Powerpoint, since I've not found any good reviews about it. I’d like to know how others have fared running native mode MSoft, especially if you’ve encountered any problems with Excel and/or Word macros. If so, have you found relatively easy fixes or workarounds to solve your problems? Are there any “gotchas” I should be aware of, with the software or with the MBP?

Thanks much.

For the time being you can run Intel-based apps just fine via "Rosetta 2" on an M1 MBP. Intel apps via Rosetta 2 supposed to run very fast.:)

Once all the "bumps" are knocked out of native MS Office Apps...then you could install a native version of Office.

Latest version of MS Office stand alone (2021) and Office 365 all run natively on Apple silicon. In the meantime as Nick says, your Intel version will run using Rosetta 2.

I have just purchased a 2022 14" M1 MBP and running MS Office for Mac recently purchased on special for US$50 from StackSocial. It runs very well.

No problems whatsoever here with Office 365 running natively on my M1 iMac.

Thanks, all, for your responses. I didn't consider migrating old MBP’s Office apps to the new one but may consider that.

As I understand it, you install your Intel version of Office as normal, then the first time you try to run it, a message will pop up telling you to install Rosetta 2 and providing a link to do so.

Office 2007 cannot be installed on a Mac. You'll have to either purchase an Office for Mac version or run it on your Mac using something like parallels.

No, It won't install. Office 2007 is 32 bit and won't run on your M1 even with Parallels and Rosetta 2.

Can office 2019 windows version be installed with rosetta 2. If possible how to go about it?
Yes, Office 2019 Windows is 64 bit and can be installed the usual way in Parallels. I don't believe you need Rosetta 2. But why install the Windows version when you can just as easily install the Mac version of Office 2019?

I have bought windows version for my laptop. As laptop become old, recently I switched to MacBook Air 2020 M1. Hence my question.

So now; are you asking if a 2019 Windows' version of Office bought for a Windows' Laptop will work on your MacBook Air? I misunderstood your earlier posts, apologies, but so did others it seems:)

Not natively. But it should do via Parallels as set out by Admin chscag in Post #16.

I have a program called "Silicon" that shows what programs run which CPU. It says my Microsoft Office jobs run "universal". On my M1 iMac, I have noticed that saving files in Office apps often takes a long time. Other than that, I have had no issues.

On your Mac with recent version of macOS, open up Activity Monitor and click on the header and select Kind if not already selected. This will show you what architecture each app/process is using. If you see Apple, it's the Apple Silicon (M1, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, etc) and if you see Intel, well it's Intel. 😃

My O365 apps are all marked as Apple.
