Nail Polish Remover spilled on MacBook Pro: Advice?

Hi, just looking for some advice!

About two weeks ago I spilled nail polish remover on my two year old macbook pro. I know it was extremely stupid. I turned it off, turned the computer over and left it sitting like that for 5 days to dry out.
After 5 days I turned it on, it booted up but then after about 20 seconds just shut off. I'd never had ANY problems with the computer before so obviously I knew something was wrong. Took it into the computer repair store and they had it for 5 days before getting back to me.
So this is what the guy told me on the phone: The keyboard needs to be replaced. With all the testing he did that's the only thing he said was wrong with it. The reason it kept shutting down on me was because the keyboard "was stuck in a shutdown command". He told me that it would be about 300$ for the keyboard to be replaced and then 170 for a new battery (the remover didn't damage the battery, I've needed a new one for awhile). So pretty much 500 bucks. But then he said that there was no guarantee that the computer would be fine if he replaces the keyboard. He said that there's a chance the nail polish remover could have "delayed effects" and could damage other parts over time.

Basically I'm wondering what I should do. Spend 500 dollars for the computer to be fixed, at the risk of it failing again in a few days? Buy a new mac? I'm in college so it's not like I can just drop $1200 on a new computer.

Do any of you have experience with this -- would the remover really still be in the computer, working away and damaging more stuff? Or do you think I'd be good to replace the keyboard and everything would be fine?

Thank you!

Nail polish remover is extremely volatile as it contains a goodly amount of lacquer thinner. Lacquer thinner can eat its way through plastics and damage circuit boards. It depends on how much of it flowed onto the logic board which sits beneath the keyboard. Damage can certainly show up later on.

The price he's charging for the keyboard replacement and battery likely includes his labor which is why the cost is $500. If it were me, I would sell the machine as is on eBay or wherever and use the money from the sale to buy a new machine.

Yeah see that kind of scares me. I guess I'll just have to buy a new one, or a refurbished one.

Would anyone really buy a broken mac though? I guess if they're really tech savvy and could do something with it. My computer is a 13 inch Macbook pro bought in August 2010, it's like 2.1 ghz I believe. I didn't buy any upgrades to ram or anything. What price should I put that at?

Look around on eBay and your local Craig's list to get some idea what other folks are asking for a machine like yours that's not working or has had a spill.

$300 for a keyboard? I've only ever replaced one laptop keyboard, on a Toshiba Satellite, and it cost me under $100. Why are Apple spares so costly?

I'm sure you're right. I'll take care not to spill anything on my 13.3" MBP!
