First off; I realise that I can - and have - searched the Web; but at the end of the day, the best advice comes from actual users.

My needs: YouTube would be a bonus rather than an essential.

I want to download videos from legitimate medical sites and similar sites that demonstrate "how to do things".

I would like to download videos - paid for and free - in general. That covers a wide group of material, I understand that.

Ideas from those who regularly download such as the above, would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Ian

I've been using 4K Video Downloader for years to download old TV videos from YouTube and Daily Motion. You can either pay for it or just install it without activation and get 10 free downloads a day with some restrictions.

I've been using ClipGrab (free) for some time and it works well. It'll probably take you about 5 minutes to figure out.

One of the download/save options is audio only. No need for additional post-download processing to extract the audio track.

I too use ClipGrab (free) and I did make a donation because it's just so simple and effective. Just the sort of thing we want to encourage from smaller independent developers.(y)

I saw all the recommendations for ClipGrab so I thought I'd give it a go and found I installed it many years ago and had forgotten about it!

I tried it and it works in a similar way to 4K Video Downloader but does not appear to have any restrictions.

Gets my vote!

OK, guys, I'll go for ClipGrab first off and give it a shot.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts. Much better than trolling through numerous comparisons online, which I did before my post.

I had to go back to ClipGrab 3.7.2 to find a version that runs in Mavericks ... but it does run!.

@ Ian

Hi Ian,
I know you mentioned you were wanting suggestions for software members of used but just in case some of the suggestions don't work for your use I've included the URL for a list of software viewers you might want to check out if you come across something special in your needs.

Have a look here for a list of Mac video viewers:

I didn't bother mentioning YouTube besides which it's not really a downloader /viewer anyway, but I can't recommend it anyway as they seem to have screwed up their sound for listening hardly any of it can be understood especially with the speakers aren't using proper English language their videos have become a pathetic joke of uselessness.

Anyway, I'm sure the members' suggestions will no doubt fulfil your needs.

PS: I thought you had retired from the doctoring world or is this just to keep your knowledge up to date? 😉

Yes Patrick, mainly. But it's difficult to change a lifetime of reading. I don't practise any more, but keep a nodding acquaintance with the literature.
