I apologis in advance if this thread is in the wrong board, please move if possible.

A few weeks ago I bought a Nifty MiniDrive. I'm having some problems using a new MicroSD card with my Nifty Minidrive Retina 13. I was previously using the default MicroSD card that came with the drive when I first bought it a few weeks ago. I've bought a 128GB card, and when I put it in the MiniDrive, my MBP doesn't recognise it - I cant even see it in Disk Utility. When I put the same MicroSD card in a SD card adapter, and put it in the same SD card slot on my MBP I can see it and also see it in Disk Utility. I have tried reformatting the 128GB card to MS-DOS, exFAT and Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but none of these formats will make the card readable when I put it in the Nifty MiniDrive. Does the MiniDrive accept non-Nifty-branded MicroSD cards?

Can anyone please suggest how I can make the new 128GB card readable in the Nifty MiniDrive?

Unfortunately, there's not enough information at their website which would tell us if the MicroSD included with the drive is proprietary. It does seem that way, however, before coming to that conclusion I would suggest contacting their tech support to find out.

there is no 128 gig card you got taken by the fake micro sd card scam. there essentially a 16 gig card firmware hacked to read as 128 gig but they don't work and are a huge scam on amazon ebay and other sites

Yeah I had a look on their website but it doesn't explicitly say. It sounds nonproprietary as it says you can use any card. I emailed them yesterday so hopefully get a response soon. Thanks :)

Update: I have tried calling Nifty several times and I've had no luck, it always goes straight to voicemail. I am calling between the hours of 0900GMT and 1100GMT mid week, so you would expect them to answer especially because it's not a public holiday in the UK now. I have also emailed them and posted to their Facebook page, to which they irritatingly told me to email them (which I already had about 11 hours prior!).

I also called Apple a few times, as each time I called I was getting fobbed off by people who had no idea what the drive was, or wanted to say it was a problem with my rMBP! Finally I got through to someone who knew what they were talking about and issued an exchange. He said I could keep the original Nifty MiniDrive also. Not really the answer I wanted, as I will have to wait for a new drive. I would rather this one was working!

I've done a YouTube video to send to Nifty, to explain the problem. It might make things more clear for you also.

Video is here

I watched the YouTube video. The 128 GB card obviously is a good card since it mounts OK with the adapter. I guess you'll just have to wait until you get the replacement Nifty Drive to see if the new one works with the 128 GB card. Let us know.

Yeah, it's certainly a wierd one, because it mounts via the SD card adapter, just not the MiniDrive. Sure thing, I'll keep you posted, I should get the replacement on Tuesday/Wednesday...

I received the new MiniDrive, and the problem has gone.

I guess it was a problem with the MiniDrve (even though it mounted the 2GB card!)

Great, glad to hear you're back in business. Strange though that the drive was OK with the 2 GB card but not the 128 GB one? Thanks for the update.
