My system preferences for notifications says to click its icon in the menu bar to show or hide the notification centre.

Should still be there unless Apple changed the method... It has been known to happen... :-(

I don't have an icon for Notification Center in my Menu Bar. I just noticed this;

I'm running macOS Monterey.

Hmm. I can't tell what some things are named. There used to be "tool tips" when you place the cursor over them. I'm not getting that.

Also removed by Apple in their recent Mac OS versions it seems. Also same as "balloon help" from Mac system OS days of long ago...

And it looks like their Monterey "Help" info is not even keeping up according to Bob's #3 post and screenshot.

Your post was clear. I guess it was assumed that you tried Cmd-Drag and that didn't work. As another poster stated, I do not have that icon in my Menu Bar. I just recently upgraded to Monterey, and have not customized the Menu Bar. That tells you that this icon is not in the default set.

Try this:

Open System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar.

On the left side there is a long list of things currently in the Menu Bar and those that could be added.

Scroll down and see if that item is shown. If it is, click on it.

This will open a small window on the right wherein you can untick "Show in Menu Bar" or modify its behaviour if you want it there occasionally.

Please come back and tell us if this has been of any help.

@ macgig
Going on the number of questions to the Internet sources over the years with the same question, a Google search doesn't seem to find any answer for hiding it that I can find other than using the Terminal commands which I believe will eliminate it completely and also prevent any Notifications from happening or working.

To do so, see here or use the Terminal Commands you want if they are different.

Hey macgig,

I found a solution and it does not involve any terminal command.

I use the Bartender utility to arrange my menu bar the way I want it and it just struck me that maybe it would work to hide the notification icon.

Sure as heck, it provides a preference to hide the icon and it works immediately. No finder or Mac restart required, nothing it just plain works if one was to use the Bartender preferences I have shown in this screenshot.

You can find all about Bartender at the developer site. I find it works very well for what I wanted to use it for:

PS: BTW, I use a very old version 1.3.3 of Bartender with my Mac OS Mavericks v. 10.9.5 FWIW.

Notification Center is not there in Monterey. OP profile indicates Catalina.

I can't seem to find it in Monterey in order to show it.

See my reply (#3) above.

Just curious here Bob, but is that really how Apple now controls different icons in the menu bar these days???:
Show and hide Notification Center by clicking the CLOCK in the menu bar.

Really...??? By clicking the clock in the menu bar to change how the notification Center shows??? Really...???

Hmmm... they really are changing the rules of the user interface if that is the case...

Saeey the directions that Mavericks 10.9.5 uses in my #2 post screenshot for a more user expected experience.

Patrick, most icons in the menu bar is still handled through System preferences. Apple only added Control Center to macOS, which is similar to their other OS versions (iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS).

It seems from their online Help article, for the most recent MacOS versions, the user now gets the option to click on the Date and Time in the menu bar to control the Notifications:
Notification Center
At the right end of the menu bar, click the date and time to open Notification Center, where you can view appointments, notes, weather, and more, and catch up on notifications you missed. See Use Notification Center.

I wonder how many users have actually discovered that little feature and method...???

And I guess that means that a recent MacOS version user can no longer hide their date and time in the menu bar??? Hmmm...???

So, you can get it to be small, just time, but something has to be there.

Thanks Jake.
So I guess users just have to remember to click on the time (clock) area to see what their choices are for their Notifications icon display.

No real reason for their logic other than I guess they sort of painted themselves into a corner and didn't have much other choice then to use another non-associated feature's icon. Whatever works I guess... and it could sure be a lot worse.

another non-associated feature's icon
Not so non-associated as you might think, Patrick. I have a world clock and a month calendar in the Notification Center, so clicking on the time is logical to see more. The Menu Bar is much more dynamic, changing the spacing between icons as the number of items changes. Even the Time setting will adjust, if you leave it as I have it set. If there are more items, the Date disappears and then reappears when there is room for it. It makes sense, at least for me.

I would think that would suit your situation perfectly, and I didn't think one could actually have such useful things in the Notification area.

The Mac's extended date plus time view I have in my menu bar along with a monthly appointment calendar suits my usage just fine.

I had to lose the old Fantastical menu bar item which was great until it became too cumbersome and far too expensive for my use. Thank gosh for alternate shareware and freeware developers.
