Odd goings on with Google and Safari

It started yesterday,
I use Google Chrome exclusively on my Macbook pro and my iMac.
Now, if I click on a desktop link it has started opening in Safari, even though they were all created with Google Chrome.
This is happening on both computers.

Can anyone shed some light?

Henry.

Assuming you are creating the links by choosing "Save Link as.." while Google and saving them as HTML files. Click on those links and choose Get Info and look at the Open With section to see what application is set to open it.

When you launch a browser like Safari or Chrome it'll usually prompt you about making it the default browser. So if Chrome is your default, ensure that it's set as the default browser system wide and it should launch all HTML files/links.

I just drag the web page address onto my screen.
In 'Get info' it says 'Safari (default)' blanked out.
All my links now say this in 'Get info'??
Very strange.
How do i change this?
I wonder how it has happened??

This is a very unusual way to maintain web page links.

Why not save website's you've visited & want to return to as "bookmarks". This is the way internet browsers are designed to be used. Makes it much easier to save as bookmarks...then they are always available via the browser drop down "Bookmarks" menu.:)

Also as Ashwin advised...make sure you've selected which browser you want as your default in the browser settings area.

HTH,

I do keep most in Bookmarks, but some that I use for shorter time I keep on my desk top.
As far as i can see Google chrome is the selected browser in Google & Safari.
The main point is that the 'get info' is saying that Safari is set to open the files.
As it is blanked out, even when I unlock it.
My question is how do I change this??
This only started yesterday.

If you see Safari as the default for those types of files/links, then you'll want to change that. Go to Sys Prefs->General and look at the Default web browser option and see what it's set to. Set it to Chrome if it isn't the default. With that setting set, all web links, HTML files and things outside of any browser will always load in the default chosen.

The Bookmarked sites open in Chrome in the normal way.
Bookmarks within a browser will always open in that browser. This doesn't take the default browser setting into consideration.

All are set to Chrome, as default browsers in both Safari and Google chrome.
I am attaching a get info from a file.
'Open with' is greyed out Safari.
How do I change this?

Click on the Lock icon on the bottom right and enter your password to unlock the panel. You should now be able to select Chrome as your browser and then click on Change All to have that take effect. You can re-lock if needed or just close the window.

I did that, but the 'Open with Safari' is still greyed out.

@Henryv

You don't mention what Operating System (OS) you have - maybe in one of your previous posts.

I'm still on Monterey, but I believe the basic approach is the same:

Open System Preferences (Settings on Ventura) > General

This is what I see:

S1.jpg

Under Default web browser, you have various options. In my case - no doubt different from you - I can choose between Safari, Brave & Google Chrome.

In your case, you need to select Google Chrome.

I just feel that the way you are dealing with this, given your screenshot, is perhaps not the way to do it.

I mean no offence - I'm not sitting next to you - I just have to guess:)

It is already set to Google Chrome Ian.
Funnily enough I have the same problem on my Macbook Pro.

Really...??? I do it all the time and have done so for ages, especially as a temporary bookmark for a page I want to go back to or just as a reminder or whatever reason other than making it a permanent bookmark.

I will often also add a label depending on its importance.

I would agree with the OP that it is a very quick and handy way for creating a bookmark.

Isn't it nice that we have options that suit us how we do some things??? ;-)

I don't do this myself, but I just ran an experiment and I can't change the default app for opening .webloc files either. The option is grayed out for me also. If I try to force the matter by holding down the OPTION key and then selecting another browser, I get this error message:

Screenshot 2023-01-19 at 15.29.09.jpg

I have a couple ideas in mind, but this may be a macOS security measure and no way around it.

Hey, this is a bit bizarre, but I use browser favicons the same way as the OP, often dragging the favicon to my desktop and when double clicked opens Google Chrome which is my default browser and has done for years.

The really bizarre part is I just checked on most of the favicles and their get info has Safari listed as the Open with choice. They don't, they open with Google Chrome,

I wonder where the other "Default" setting might be that has been working for years??? As I say, a bit bizarre.

EDIT:
FOUND...
No real problem but I just checked my browser preferences and the normally default Safari preferences > General has Google Chrome as the default browser, as does Google Chrome itself.
But it looks like Safari's preference becomes the ruling decision maker, I guess the OS forgot to tell the Get Info windows: ;-)

PS: I'm using Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 as my normally default operating system in case anyone was wondering.

Aaaaannnd.... booyah! I have a solution. This is actually NOT a new problem. I found a discussion on Ask Different where someone was looking to change this same behavior in Sierra. There is no built-in solution, but I had a feeling that an app I have on hand... SwiftDefaultApps could do the job, but I didn't know where in the app the needed toggle was. Thankfully this discussion provided the solution, and it works! In Ventura, no less!

You could do this with a Terminal command, but the easier thing to do is use SwiftDefaultApps. The discussion linked to has the details. I'll gloss over them.

Download and install SwiftDefaultApps from GitHub.

Open it up from System Preferences/System Settings and look for the tab titled Uniform Type Identifiers. In that, scroll down to the entry for com.apple.web-internet-location. Do the obvious from there.

No need to use anything extra, either a terminal command or utility, just check the general preferences of Apples major applications used for web browser and email, ie: Safari.app and Mail.app where the preferred default replacement application name can be added or changed in their Preferences.

Nice and simple IMO. ;-)
